"Don't buy your children what you never had, teach them what you were never taught" Don't know who said it but it's very relevant to how I live my life.

When problems hit people will find a way to get through it. It's never a lost cause in my opinion. Yes it's easier when there's resource and support but I do agree that if something is needed a way will be sought no matter how hard.

Many of us just haven't really been tested enough to need to find the way.

I've had a recommendation for Avon So Soft Dry Oil Spray as an anti-mozzie product - I checked out ebay and amazon and the cheapest online route is from avon themselves, whose local rep will deliver it to my door for free, can be paid in cash, and seems to deliver when its most convenient to me (next Tuesday is the first day I mentioned). Here's hoping.

I've had a lot of recommendations for that product, generally originating with armed forces personnel.
I've more experience with midge than mosquito, and it reduces but doesn't eliminate midge attention - but I'm not sure anything can.
I'd also recommend using a mosquito hood for midge, though just avoiding midge country April to November might be the only real solution.

I believe the Avon Skin So Soft contains citronella oil which is widely used in insect repellents.

    I'd also carry some anti-histamines.

Absolutely nuatha. Avon's Skin So Soft is a must in DH's fishing bag. The ribbing he receives for using it is something I wish to witness. :rotfl:

Apparently, in our local uni, the minor surgery course is an elective which includes suturing, joint injections, removing cysts, lipomas and ingrowing toenails.

I might be interested - I wonder what the prerequisites are?

That sounds like a classic case of premature extrapolation.

I believe it has to be the original, jade coloured spray bottle - others don't have the same anti-mozzie effect.

:p Hell, I'm sure I've read that the SAS take crates of the stuff with them and they're no wusses.

The highland scottish midge is a terror which cannot be adequately appreciated by those who have not had the pleasure of its attentions. I still flinch to recall the blasted things getting into my hairline, my ears, nostrils, eyes, and in every place where clothing met flesh, like anorak sleeves. Horrible things.

I've been told the same, from people who'd know.

Its the sheer density of midge that gets to me, it can be almost impossible to breathe since they seem to be a form fitting solid mass. Absolutely no exposed flesh, no gaps in clothing (I have used gaffer tape to seal gloves to jacket) and don't disturb your gear until you are well away from the infected areas.
Strip off outer clothing before entering tent, vehicle or hotel room, because there's probably a thousand sitting in clothing and bag folds just waiting for the opportunity to dine on you.
