Capella, yes I work in a secondary school, we are also constantly upgrading our security.

I once temped on reception of a housing association, where I wasn't allowed a fan in case someone threw it at me.
One day a fight broke out in reception and someone was stabbed with a screwdriver.

    Well done Lyn

Hearing the stories about the risk's you public worker's have to put up with makes me glad I work in a care home, the biggest danger is getting run over by one of the staff taking a resident from A to B, and of course walking stick's .........

Also if you are carrying extra shoes then that might raise warning flags at security desks.

    I always carry extra shoes.

I travel in soft plimsolls, and carry a pair of stout shoes in my luggage.

If I wear the stout shoes while travelling, my feet ache.

I can see the sense of having made preparations, hoarding essentials and considering all sorts of eventualities, but we should also be anticipating the psychological aspects of any catastrophe. Those around us might be suffering from PTSD or similar and some sort of understanding/education of this aspect is equally important.

Happy Easter folks. The sun is shining and I'm looking for a lusty young man. :D Going to risk upsetting the neighbours by digging up part of the lawn. It should be left till just before winter to break down the soil but I'm getting twitchy green fingers. Just need to get something productive going. Can't wait to sow my nasturtiums though it's a bit early here yet. Maybe a few round the ancient cobbled courtyard where I get the most sun. Lovely to look at AND to eat. What's not to love? :T
  • Valid point LIVING PROOF and no one of us is immune to being human and reacting and feeling like everyone else. I think we might have a small edge though because we have collectively faced up to the idea that bad and disruptive things can and do happen and can happen in anyones life and made some physical provision to mitigate the events as much as we can. I think part of that preparation though is the mental resilience to understand the concept that things could go awry in the first place, we see images in the media like we did a couple of days ago from Brussels and are horrified along with everyone else, rightly so, and as well as the compassion and horror I felt there was a great deal of anger, I guess I'm not alone in that and also the knowledge that in my home there is provision to stay inside if it's safe to do so for weeks and weeks and also the wherewithal to leave here for a place of safety instantly and with what we would need for the journey to that place including shelter, provisions, medication, documents of importance and perhaps even something to act as a defence weapon even if that is only a heavy walking stick made from ebony. I can only speak for me but my own first reaction to events is not to scream and fling up my hands in horror, it is to assess the situation and get in and do what needs to be done to save life. I've been present at a couple of life changing events for other people including seeing a child loose a leg in and accident and being the only person there and I dealt with it, dealt with the injury and stayed until it had been dealt with by the ambulance crew, the police and the kids parents who I sent someone to get because the child gave me the details laying in the road holding my hand. It's not optional to stand and scream in my head, I have to fix if I can and I'm pretty sure that lots of preppers will have that same outlook. Yes it's difficult to sleep for a while and you do get playbacks but that's normal and life hopefully goes on.. Certainly did with that lad who asked for a new bike in hospital when he woke up from the operation 'cos that lady said I'd have a bionic one like on the telly' and you know what? He got his bike and learned to ride it and play football again, result!!!

Is he to help digging the garden, or do you have something else in mind? :)
