Lots of sympathy from me too, maryb! Not a bundle of fun... isn't it odd how shockwaves travel? When I pranged one of our cars by (very stupidly) nosing out of a turning (on a bend) in front of someone who was travelling a tad faster than they should have been, and wasn't looking, the shock of the steering column breaking travelled up the column (despite having been hit at 90º) through the wheel and broke my little finger. I was very lucky that it wasn't much worse, but couldn't work out why my finger was hurting for days, until the doctor explained it. I'd have expected the shock to have travelled up my arm, if I'd thought about it, not concentrate in one little bone.

  • I've been mulling over the EU referendum for a while now and how I'd be likely to vote and I think yesterdays attack in Belgium has been the point at which I've made the decision to vote to stay in. DD1 teaches politics as well as history and we've talked through many situations over the years, she has a clear and unemotional analysis of most happenings and more background knowledge than I'll ever have. We talked over the pros and cons of staying or leaving and I'm convinced that leaving would be a bigger security risk to the UK than staying in. Both routes have problems attached to them but I know that we have a large and very porous coastline which would be impossible to police entirely even if we did have enough coast and border agency staff to do it. The thought that our European country neighbours would no longer be prepared to stop would be migrants from attempting to get to the UK is really chilling enough to sway me into the stay in Europe camp. We will all have our own take and reasons for it on the decision we make about voting, no where is actually safe from terrorist/criminal actions these days, the world is a very small and accessible place for them. I will feel less unsafe knowing that some effort is still being made to contain the flow of displaced and economic migrants than if we decided to stand alone.

I remember when most bins were removed from town centres after the IRA bombs in Warrington but after a few years they replaced them with plastic bins which were supposed to contain the blast better. If they are taking them away again that suggests a different type of bomb is worrying them.

Interesting you say that Mrs L, the bookmakers seem to have shortened odds on a Brexit

I don't understand the terminology used when people talk about odds :o if the odds have "shortened" does that mean the bookies think Brexit is more likely or less likely?

Really embarrassed at having to ask :o:D

Odds shortened means that return on a bet has reduced. Bookies give short odds on things that are likely to happen.
  • As I understand it, shortening odds means that instead of 10 to 1 against something happening the numbers are reducing through 9to1, 8to1, and so on so that the chance of the event increases; more people think it will happen and so the odds reduce. HTH

  • Hi MARYB sorry to hear of your accident and hope you are more comfortable now and on the mend.

I think having the cold, clear facts put to me in a factual and unemotional way from someone who understands both sides of the picture was much more elucidating than going with my emotions and gut instinct. DD1 has a depth of perception based on historic and political events from the past and today and could take me through likelihoods of staying or leaving the EU and the implications and likely results for the average UK citizen. It clarified the situation for me and yesterdays atrocities in Belgium finalised the process. I don't agree with all the things that staying in as an EU member will continue to bring into our lives but I have enough information now to make me decide that we will be in a much better position security wise in the future if I vote stay than if I vote leave the EU.
