Greenbee, I must be missing something here, but I'm wondering how you'll get any heat out of electric radiators if the 'leccy's gone off...?

Yeah, I wondered about that. Maybe you could tip the oil out of the radiators and set fire to it? :)

:j I knew that! I've been there - it's got a pencil museum? Or was that somewhere else?

yes it's in keswick - we've camped in braithwaite many times, fab views. Poor people - it's a good pub though - was first introduced to "pass the pigs" game there - they've plenty of games, no-one will be bored :)

hope everyone on here is safe and warm.

watched something on atlantic (sky channel) yesterday called "ten billion" by professor stephen emmoot im quoting verbatim he said "the world is fxxxxxcced* through overpopulation, global warming, from melting permafrost releasing methane, increasing scarcity of food and fresh water.....the timescale is decades , he may have been sensationalizing for book sales, but he does paint a grim picture......the 2009 floods were supposed to be a 1 in 100 year event.... on a lighter note still enjoying my coffee pod machine .....take care

Isn't that a bit out of date, iirc we won't make 10 Billion?

Also I think humanity is far more resourceful that he gives us credit for, that's not to say some things need to be dealt with and we need to find better ways of getting on with each other.

Perhaps we have to end up realising we're the crew of a large space ship and actively managing it's crew compartment?

:( Everyone I know with a degree in environmental science is firmly of the opinion that we, like every other living organism, will expand to the limits of our environment and then suffer a catastrophic die-back. And that we're no more capable of controlling our numbers than microbes or mice.

It'll be war over resources, as it always was; potable water, oil, land. Our current population levels are only sustainable due to oil and natural gas based agriculture. Once they've dwindled or disappeared, your guess is as good as mine but I wouldn't fancy being around towards the end of the 21st century.

Luckily for me, that will be far beyond my life expectancy, so one less crew person on spaceship earth.

  • WOLF AT THE DOOR reckons that post Peak Oil the population will suffer a 90% die off and the remaining 10% will be subsistence level living for ever after!!!

It's all speculation though, isn't it? No one knows (obviously) what will be discovered to enhance (or dehance :p) anything - we can only go on a ceteris paribus basis.

:o Sorry, say nothing for months and then delurk to chuck in some latin - and made up words.

I shall go back to my coffee from a perfectly functional (cheaper and less wasteful) cafetiere. And, whilst I know other coffee machines are available, the fact that the biggest seller is Ne$pre$$o certainly deters, i will not buy Ne$tle anything - ever (so far as i am able - some of the "other" Ne$tle brands are notoriously hard to spot)
I wanna be in the room where it happens
