in that situation i would do as what others have mentioned..i forgot about buying chocolate though:eek:
while thinking i remembered i had forgoten about the gas bbq for heating water and cooking if electric went off.
thing is though we are lucky we could afford to go and get lots of food in..what about people who can only afford what they can eat in a week, tbh its even more important for them to preb and buy a bit at a time to put away isnt it?
love this thread..to start with ill be adding some bottles of water to my next shop to keep in pantry and am eying up a solar powered charger as it must cost a fortune to charge my phone as it needs doing every 2 days
people keep asking me what i want for my birthday next week, im turning 30, best not say a cross bow as they will think im nuts:rotfl:
i love watching the walking dead..though im constantly telling them what they doing wrong :rotfl:Have a Bsc Hons open degree from the Open University 2015 :j:D:eek::T0 -
One of the things I need to get in order to face a fuel shortage is a log splitter. We have plenty of wood logs but they are too big for our stove. Can anyone suggest a good one please? There are so many choices and we don't know whether it is worth spending a lot of money or if a cheaper one will do the jib just as well. Thanks in advance! Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).0

Hi all
Gigervamp the water purification tablets i bought have a sell by date of 04/2017 ( I don't know how to do a link:o but i bought them from the rainforest place, oasis pack of 50, 1 tablet purifies 1 litre and they were under £3, hth.
Thinking about the latest scenario I realise our spare gas for cooker needs replaced, we have a duel fuel cooker (Bottled gas and electric), but keep camping stoves too, so would try and get one a.s.a.p. I have some money in house but would want to take out more and buy some extra supplies.
I would also phone my parents and tell them to get round pronto as I know they don't have enough supplies to last. Thinking about that makes me realise we maybe need more stuff, as other family members could easily descend on us as we are known for being the "quirky" self sufficient ones,so maybe need to consider more food?
I have a pretty good store cupboard but it wouldnt last weeks and weeks. Before anything happens I really need to spend a bit of time seeing if the stores could make up some nutritious meals as have a suspicion we would be eating some strange combinations. Thanks for reminder about salt, definately need to buy more.
Think i might try and comandiere a shelving unit in OH's garage for extra bits and bobs as hardly have any cupboard space in house, I think i may have to smile sweetly this weekend:rotfl:.Moving towards a life that is more relaxed and kinder to the environment (embracing my inner hippy:D) .:j0 -
People in the prepping sites always want to head for the hills in Scotland - I keep telling them people already live in them
(ie moi) -and they cant expect just to walk in and be welcomed. But that's veering onto more serious zombie/EOTW stuff and I don't do that, got enough probs already ta.
We did have some people who wanted to do this, until I posted pics on Flickr of the terrain around here. Then they decided to try for the Scilly isles instead :rotfl:0 -

Amazing how little thought some of them have put into bug out locations, considering the amount of thought they've put into other aspects of prepping.
I love the border hills, learned most of my hillwalking and mapreading in them, but they aren't exactly benign environments and the Scottish Mountains are even less friendly. Blizzards in July anyone?
In response to your earlier scenario.
Phone OH, ensure her car is topped off with fuel and she's heading home. Same with MIL, except she's heading to ours. Two phone calls to friends letting them know the score. Top up my fuel tank, shop for fresh milk, eggs, fresh veg. (Alongside anything that is on my top up shopping list) Get a vegetable casserole going in the slow cooker and clear the crap off the spare beds.0 -
If there are food supply problems then rationing would come into place pretty darn quick and I bet that ration books are already printed out based on the last census. Our law and disorder problems will come from people who were never on the census.0

ooh good one Mar
:D
I found a really good list called the TEOTWAWKI costco shopping list on Survivalmom will add a link in a mo it needs a few tweaks to personalise it but its a good start if you don't have one already.
http://thesurvivalmom.com/2010/11/09/survival-shopping-at-costco/
Since the great petrol strike that never was fiasco we now keep the car topped up at all times so thats one less thing to do,one thing I won't do is store fuel as I'm a scaredy cat
Now eldest can drive and has a car he has a list in his glovebox what to do in emergencies including a last minute shopping list lol Its in his prep kit I made him when he passed his test.So he would cover the diy/camping stores side of things while me and OH did the grocery run..
I would only really do one if it was looking very serious as realistically we are always prepped and safety would have to come first..
Fresh produce that I could can, dehydrate and preserve would be top of the list then dairy, mainly eggs as we have no chooks (I do have egg replacer stored tho) milk for freezing (I have powdered) Butter and lard for baking (I have tinned marg also tho lol)0 -
Helpless in giggles here picturing the RV and I racing through the front door of Costco with a list each, covering in guns n ammo like Burt and Heather in Tremors :rotfl::rotfl:0

I think it would depend on whether you go for an electric one (not much use if the leccy goes off) or for one of the hand operated ones.
We had an electric ryobi which was very good. HTH

Been a while since I posted in here but I have been doing a great job of lurking and reading everyone's posts
Loving the imaginary situations for us to think about - you really do never know what's just around the corner.
I've been meaning to sort out grab bags for each of us for months now, as well as a 'power-cut box' to keep in the living room cupboard, and today I am finally getting around to it! Been making some lists, and so far I have got the following in mind:
For myself:
- Spare set of clothes (top, cardi, trousers, thick socks, underwear)
- Hat, scarf, gloves and poncho
- Mini first aid kit of plasters, paracetamol + ibuprofen
- Anti-bac hand spray, a pack of wet wipes and a pack of tissues
- 10 tealight candles and a box of matches, plus a torch
- Small notebook, couple of pens and a list of important phone numbers
- 2 x bottles of water and some high-energy snacks
- Thermal flask, plastic spoon, little tub of teabags and a carton of UHT milk
- Travel sewing kit
- My mini copy of the 'Food for Free' book, 'cause you never know
- Cash in small change
For my partner:
- Spare set of clothes (top, jacket, trousers, thick socks, boxers)
- Hat, scarf, gloves and poncho
- Lighter and torch
- Swiss army knife
- 2 x bottles of water and some high-energy snacks
- Mini first aid kit of painkillers, plasters and a support bandage (sometimes his ankle gives out on him) and a pack of tissues
- Small notebook, couple of pens and a list of important phone numbers
- Thermal cup and plastic spoon
- Cash in small change
For my 2 year old stepson:
- Spare set of clothes (top, 2 x trousers, cardigan, pants, thick socks)
- Hat, scarf, gloves and waterproof raincoat
- Little colouring book, pack of crayons and a couple of small toy cars
- Wipes and a pack of tissues
- Some pull-ups and nappies (currently potty training and in nappies at night)
- 2 x bottles of juices and some snacks
- His special Spongebob plastersand some Calpol
- Beaker
- Fleece blanket (for warmth, but also security as he likes the feel of them when he's scared/tired/etc)
Just need to find some actual bags to keep it all in now! I take it most people find rucksacks/backpacks to be the best idea?
The 'power-cut box' is just very basic - a torch, some candles and a box of matches that are easy to find/get to if the power goes. I don't have a store cupboard as such as there is no room for one, but I keep my kitchen cupboards full as best I can and rotated so nothing goes out of date0
