  • Paying staff in IOU's???

...and just how do they think that particular proposal would work pray tell? I cant quite see Greek civil servants/retirees being able to go into shops and offering them an IOU in payment for goods bought somehow...

When I checked transferwise this morning, the £/euro rate was 1.37 something. Now its 1.39 something (1.39215, currently). Thats a big shift!

:( I expect that the Greek government would expect any monies owed to them by the citizens in taxes and fees to be paid in cash rather than IOUs.

If my local council could accept worthless IOUs from me in lieu of 8% of my net income, I could afford to not be paid one month in twelve and not notice any difference to my personal bottom line.

I can't for the life of me see how this can end in anything other than a Grexit default and it seems that it might as well be sooner rather than later. This is slow torture rather than a mercy killing.

    Hello All

Wild bee swarms are often part of a hive colony that have split from the existing colony to form a new one. This time of year it is important to keep an eye out in your colonies for the signs of them "thinking" about swarming and hopefully giving them better options to keep your colony large and strong.
There are different strains of honey bee which may result in the darker bees being seen; many bees are a hybrid of strains imported from all over Europe.
My poor bees have been neglected recently due to my recent upheavals. I will have to don my silly white suit and spaceman hat and go and investigate how they are getting on! Even though I am a bee keeper technically still feel silly in my suit! LOL If they are in need of more space I will have to pull my finger out and make up some frames and extra boxes otherwise I could loose half to a swarm.

As for rain think how you would feel if a proportionate drop of water was to land on you!! You would stay indoors!! LOL

    Afternoon from the wilderness

RL has kept me away for AGES, but am ready to rejoin the fold, if y'all will have me back?

As I've no idea if anyone's lost or gained family or fur babies, please take a hug in lieu of sympathy or congrats :group hug:

Off to have a read of more recent posts.

They were used in California when they had their fiscal crisis. They are also usable by businesses to pay their taxes. So a shop can accept them and then use them to pay their own tax bill. As the economy recovers they are phased out of use.

    I.O.U's?

Isn't that what everyone in every country uses at the moment? :)

I first went to Greece in the 1970s, and it was common for change in shops to be given as sweets....

I've no idea how many other countries have something along the lines of "I promise to pay the bearer the sum of" but that's a government IOU (and a false promise since 1914).

Since the repeal of the Truck Acts (Wages Act 1986, superseded by Employment Rights Act 1996), I believe there is no legal right to
be paid in coin of the realm. If memory serves it was Carlisle Council that floated the idea of paying all its staff in Tesco vouchers - thankfully it didn't come to pass.
