I've heard both dentists and doctors express the opinion that some people just have stronger teeth than others, and can take less care with them than others and still keep them. While others can do all the right things and still suffer decay and tooth loss.
A consultant at a hospital told me an anecdote about her own mother who had been taken into hospital in her late nineties with a stroke. The daughter rushed to her bedside and, after talking to the nurses, ended up laughing heartily at what was otherwise a distressing time.
It seems that a nurse had been bitten my Mother. Daughter asked whatever had she been doing, as Mother was the gentlest of women.
Turns out Nurse had been attempting to remove the false teeth of this almost-centenarian patient, never having imagined for a moment that these flawless gnashers, with no fillings or damage, could be the patient's own teeth.:rotfl:Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

This is interesting. It seems that rather than the US Federal Reserve buying government bonds, the banks (who own the Fed) are buying the bonds instead. So are in fact continuing the QE that the Fed ostensibly stopped.
I wonder if anything similar is happening in Blighty.

All QE was meant to do was to shore up the value of bank assets so that they do not have to be written down at their true value. Which would mean that they are insolvent. If they did that then nearly all the big banks around the world would be insolvent. The fact that it might get to the ordinary person in terms of cheap loans and credit was not even a reality, but that was how it was portrayed. I suspect that the reason that the banks are stepping in is to avoid the reality that the rest of their balance sheets are also pretty crummy and so have to take write downs on those losses if the market collapsed. If they get bigger then the governments will be threatened with armageddon unless they are bailed out again. It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.0 -
Yeah. I guess it makes sense:
Borrow millions from the central bank at 0.05%, and invest that in a government bond paying 0.5%, result £4500 income every year for every million borrowed.0 -
A friend had a tubal tie and burn after her first child, a partial hysterectomy after her second and a full hysterectomy after her third.
It's stories like that which made me pick having the tubes removed entirely. And my doc was so understanding of my need for complete security in that, he'll be showing me not only the pathology report on both tubes, but a camera phone photo of them in a dish. :rotfl:
A lady I used to work with told me just the other day about her tubal clipping. 7 years later she found out it hadn't worked, when she was rushed into hospital miscarrying.
My nan had all her teeth removed before marriage. It was most certainly the done thing then. I think women showing a less than perfect set of bright white tombstone dentures within her social circle after marriage were looked down on somehow. It certainly made for practicality for her as regarded dental costs, but I recall her discomfort too.Softstuff- Officially better than 0070 -
Hey Ho..I'm back, for the foreseeable anyhooz..whadidimiss
It is most fortuitous to find you discussing dentures as I have a query you may be able to help me with. Me muvva had her gnashers replaces with falsies years ago & has never been back to have them checked for fit etc. I know they are loose (but she won't admit it) but I wondered if they could be 'blunt' too, because she says the most tender of meat or fish is "tough". Do false teeth wear down.. can you send them off in the post to be re-sharpened..or could I find a good door step to grind a new edge to them myself :rotfl:

As I understand it BigMummaF, the fit has a lot to do with how well she'll be able to chew. If the teeth are moving around as she's trying to take a bite, she won't get much chew for her effort!
Teeth don't have to all that sharp for meat. Unless you cook it like my ex husband used to :rotfl: As for sharpening, I'm reminded of sharpening scissors using sandpaper, so have an image in my head of you saying to her "ere, chew on this!".Softstuff- Officially better than 0070 -

Exactly it is just another massive subsidy for the banks. So it is why I am clearing debts as fast as possible to avoid the deflation that is coming. Some economists are claiming that QE is the cause of deflation which is stupid because it has been the reason that deflation has not taken place right now. Once all monetary policy fails then deflation will work its magic and reset the financial markets and force people to take their losses. Property will fall in value substantially but when is another matter. It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.0
