I try to avoid the anti bac gels that contain alcohol. It may be my paranoia but alcohol is very bad for the inside of the body so I don't fancy rubbing that stuff to the outer layers either. Some of the girls I work with don't wash their hands because they have the anti bac gel. I find it weird that someone would not to want to wash off (insert any thing that can come out of, or accumulate on, a human) and choose to rub over it
I do have alcohol free hand gel in my tunic and bacterial wipes in my car... simply because I have to touch the file, door handle, pen etc etc of that girl who has just rubbed over hands
That stuff definitely has it's place but I don't rely on it.0 -
going on a unison march in london on saturday ...our local branch organizing it.......my neighbours a nice polish couple dropped off a thank you card and choccies..... because i took in a few parcels for them.... nice of them (didn't have the heart to tell them i am diabetic though).. shoulder not fully healed but is improving......the recent global downturn is somewhat worrying.... as its come from no where....sharks seem to be circling Greece again
Chocolates still a tradable item in a SHTF situation, even better that you cannot use so definitely will be useful to someone. It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.0 -
I have some anti bacterial but for my BOB. Though normally I stick to normal soaps and detergents as they do not disrupt environment. I suspect that too many anti bacterials are partially responsible for a rise in allergies. It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.0

I find it desperately sad that once again the World has stood by and done nothing to help in Africa

Do you mean countries like china, who exploit africa, russia who also exploits africa, the very rich arab states?
I think that we, in the uk, are an extremely generous nation and are the first to put our (collective) hands in our pockets0 -
I'm all in favour of giving third world countries any and all aid that it is possible to give in a situation as dire as this ebola outbreak which has ramifications across the whole planet but I also think that being in charge of your own situation back here in the relatively safe western world is just common sense as well. I can't see how not making preparation for a potential problem can in any way help some poor soul in Africa who has ebola. Prepping for any eventuality for me is to NOT be part of the problem and to not have to take time and people from the emergency services that could be used to help someone else. I don't approve of or condone actions by governments and companies that adversely affects anyone else either.0

China I'm looking at you and Russia and Dubai and Saudi Arabia and Qatar. What have you got to say about this then?0 -
The introduction of anti bacs into our daily routine is in addition to the normal practice of hand washing with soap before meals & after using the bathroom. Today I counted a cashier sneeze 4 times whist serving me at the till. I was like 'REALLY?!' & thankful that I had added a hand gel to my hand bag. Unnecessary cleaning products & chemicals have not been part of my children's upbringing (& I'm hopeful that not in the future too) but I'd like to try & prevent any unnecessary illnesses over the next few foreseeable months that may involve an unwanted trip to the Drs or A&E. These are not places I like to be at the best of times, norovirus season is upon us if nothing else.
As for the healthcare workers that are being sent over to Africa I'd hope that they will be placed in quarantine for the 21 day (or however long it is) incubation period before they are allowed to fly home. That just strikes me as common sense but we'll see. We've only got to look across the pond to see how traveling healthcare workers fair & the panic it causes.0 -
I use a zinc spray in my nose, and zinc pastilles when travelling for work, as apparently they make it harder for the germs to infect you (I also wash my hands, avoid touching things and use lots of hand cream, and have antibac gel for times when I can't get access to soap and water to wash, but always find I want to wash it off as soon as I can!).
Sometimes you can't avoid contact with the outside world, but taking sensible precautions can help.
I try to avoid contact with doors/taps etc too - the introduction of sensors for toilet flushing and soap dispensers and taps has been a bonus. I open 'push' doors by leaning against them, and tend to try to use elbows rather than bare skin to touch handles where possible. I'm sure you'll have noticed that many hospitals have taps that can be turned on with an elbow to avoid grubby hands touching the taps before washing.0 -
lots of motorway service stations have screens for the loo area rather than doors so that people don't have to touch a handle after they have washed their hands, such a good idea. I hope they revamp the loos in our local shopping centre like that. It's been rebranded Intu (all those sylvan names like Lakeside, the Glades, Bluewater, Meadowhall are clearly very Noughties) and they are revamping the bits that show, but you have to be pretty desperate to use the loos, so obviously that comes way down the list of prioritiesIt doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0
