BTW, can't recall who recommended the Mr Money Mustache website but I have spent a lot of time over there already and am about to spend some more - really enjoying that one, thank you.

    Guilty as charged :D

I suppose it would be a good idea to remember any recent local problems and plan accordingly. The afternoon that the rain fell on the roads that were gritted due to snow; the rain froze and gridlock ensued. (walk home) The road gridlock due to panels falling off a half completed high building. (get the train) The empty shelves due to shops being closed for one day every year over Christmas. (Stock the cupboard) The water pouring through the kitchen ceiling due to the upstairs neighbour's washer going wrong... now, that was entertaining, as we had hot water through one light fitting and cold through the other :D (ensure the stocks are somewhere covered)

Yea, spotted that one. Not sure if it's just "headline grabbing" at present but am sure glad that I got the aforementioned in pervious post, wood burner!

i deffo think all that the government knows it should be a priority for new housing to all have chimmneys.

Most new houses don't have the room to store the wood needed for any length of time. Wood's not a cheap option, unless you have a reliable local supply, and the rising popularity of wood burners is racking up the cost of timber for fuel. I was gobsmacked by my friend's bill for wood for a single winter and she knows who to buy from locally. If you don't have a wood burner or a snug fitting fire over a fireplace, your heat will be sucked up the chimney. It happened in out first house, which had vents over the unused fireplaces. Incidentally it costs nearly as much to run one gas fire as to run the central heating, or so my heating maintenance company tells me.

It's not just near you that they're building houses with no chimneys, it seems to be all over. I just bought a house in the last couple of years and surprisingly this development did have chimneys, however, 95% of the purchasers were putting in gas/electric fireplaces. I went for a wood burner and am so glad I did, they're great.
I'm not sure how some are gonna be able to cope when there's a fuel shortage, some people do indeed seem to be short sighted...
They seem to just be building lots of flats around here over 2,000 in the last year alone, no wonder we have trouble getting schools of choice, or GP and hospital appointments

We have a multifuel stove so it burns wood and coal, so we have been buying a few bags of coal every week and we can get a transit van full of logs from locally sourced wood for £30 plus we get free pallets from a friend who has his own company

A thermal bag that cooks? Like a slow cooker? Will investigate! How the heck have I missed this :rotfl:
  • FUDDLE there is a Thermal Cooker thread started by Memory Girl and several of us have made 'wonderbags' that's what they are called originally. They were invented by a lady in South Africa to help the local ladies there who suffer from cooking over an open fire and have to stand in the smoke which makes them ill. To use a wonderbag you need to get your food up to boiling point on the hob and then hold it there for 10 minutes and then you pop it into the wonderbag which is made from heavy cotton and filled with polystyrene beads, pop on the cushion style lid and pull the bag up over the pan with the drawstring round it's outside and leave it for at least 5 hours and when you go back to it you have perfectly cooked food for only 10 minutes worth of fuel. They work just like a slow cooker and are a variant of the old Haybox Cookers that were used in ww2. DD1 and I made one from a remnant of upholstery material and the inside of an old beanbag, so it cost me nothing!!! It's a good addition to the kitchen, have a look!!! Lyn xxx.
