Anyone recall to old playground song? Pease being a plural for 'pease' and a staple carbohydrate. Pease porridge hot, pease porridge cold,Pease porridge in the pot, nine days old; Some like it hot, some like it cold,Some like it in the pot, nine days old.[
Yeah, I remember. I think it was on one of my nursery rhyme albums as a child. I asked my parents what pease porridge was, and they made me some.
It's lovely with frankfurters & mash.0 -
Oh well it's not actually the government proposing getting rid of cash and using electronic money, but a former member of the BOE's monetary policy committee, Willem Buiter. (Not sure whether this is getting a stooge to fly a few kites and see if they take off or not.)
This idea has been taken up by this Harvard Professor Kenneth Rogoff, who makes the point that there is $4000 in paper money for every person in the USA, so therefore most of it must be in the hands of criminals. [Can you tell that I'm using my sarcastic voice there.]
Having had a card die on me yesterday (the chip gave up the ghost) I realised how lost I would be if I only had one card (fortunately I have access to other accounts with other providers) and had no cash. I wouldn't like to be in town if everyone suddenly realised their cards had stopped working
I don't think a move to electronic payments would go down well in Europe - most people in the supermarkets still seem to pay by cash - or even cheque. In Italy it's such a cash based economy that even the petrol pumps take cash.It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0 -
I think the existance of cash, in a world where the technology for cashless transactions is possible (and provides 100% grubbyment spying and control) must drive TPTB bat$hit crazy.
I mean, people are going to carboot sales and buying stuff without paying VAT fer crying out loud. Other people are contracting with tradespersons without giving The Man a piece of the action.
They're like to M a f i a but with fewer goons. We mustn't be allowed to get away with what we're doing, we must give our payola to them at each and every turn, so that they can cripple the economy still further by bleeding the wealth out at each and every turn.
C'mon, lovely peeps, you didn't imagine your money was your money, did you? It's their money, we're just temporarily borrowing it, like a toddler with Mummy's car keys.
Pay cash for everything, everywhere, everytime. Confuse The Beast by denying its precious data feed. Cash if you can, and barter if you can, and take as much of your life back from them as possible.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

I've stopped using 'loyalty cards' completely, the Co Op because it's a pointless exercise and there isn't going to be either a dividend payout or donation to the community fund any longer and Mr.Ts because I just can't abide the idea of them keeping tabs on what I do buy in thier overpriced shops. The come on vouchers they've been sending me have been ludicrous lately for the most expensive finest range products and mostly things I've never and never will buy due to the expense. I pay cash now, smile sweetly and say oh sorry, I've left all the cards on the table at home.0

Evenin' all... just catching up, RL busy as always. Strangely I don't have any feeling of impending doom at the moment, I think things are just going to slide slowly until we're all accepting a lower standard of living. It probably only takes one generation to accept quite big changes and it's quite possible that our children will look back on the habits and customs of the late twentieth century with amusement. Plenty of children will be growing up with no experience of foreign holidays, older cars, and lower expectations of what life can provide. I remember we used to eat meat pretty much every day growing up, our children eat veggie as often as not because meat is so dear. One of the things I have decided is that I want to grow condiments........
It strikes me that a lot of very basic food is a lot nicer if you have some flavourings to counter taste fatigue.
My plot friends get peed off with coriander because it runs to seed? I like the seed for use in curries and Mediteranean dishes. I save poppy and mustard seeds as well. Going to try cumin and fenugreek this year.
But ditto lots of other things that we can grow like sage, bay, thyme and chives. Needing a bit more care fennel, dill seed, mustard, caraway, chilli and paprika.
Have tried growing horseradish but it did not really take so will try and get more slips this year. Would like to try to grow lemon grass but I understand it is harder.0 -
You can grow haricots here, they did in wartime and they are just a small white kidney type bean. The trouble with growing beans purposely to dry them is they tie up large amount of productive land for the entire season and you seem to get a small return for your efforts as you need huge amounts of dried pods to get a relatively small amount of beans. Borlottis grow well here too, we've dne those for years and as the seeds are bigger, you feel as if you get more for your efforts!0

talking of growing beans I is not a happy allotmenteer. None of my French beans have come up and only about three of my 20 runner beans - and they're not looking too good. GQ I shall join you in giving the slimy baataards that are eating my runners some cold hard steel!
Meanwhile I need to sow some more and get them going as quickly as poss. Do I remember rightly that you soak your bean seeds overnight before sowing? Does it make a big difference? And do you do the same with courgettes which I also find are a bit hard to get going? Once they do take off they take over.
Who would have thought I'd have trouble growing runner beans? I was hoping to grow enough to freeze enough for the winter and experiment with other methods of preservationIt doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0 -
If we have seeds that are hard to get germinating He Who Knows pops thim into a lidded plastic box with a layer of damp kitchen towel in and pops them into the airing cupboard for a few days, you have to keep your eye on them as when they do get going they grow the rootlet like crazy, if you've an airing cupboard it might gain you a few days on sowing then in the greenhouse, worth a try maybe? So basically eliminating cash would make it much easier to do a Cyprus but the pain would be less immediate and obvious - but also last longerIt doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0
