  • I went into town today as I needed to top up a couple of things for us and think I might have come up with a good way of building the stocks in the storecupboard. I set myself a top limit of £3 and wanted to buy a complete meal to go into the stocks and I got a tin of Princes corned beef (on offer this week) for £2, a tin of potatoes for 15p and a big tin of british marrowfat peas for 50p which leaves 35p so I got a basics tin of rice pudding which is the meal for £3. I'm going to do this every week from now on and in the course of a year will accumulate 52 complete meals to add to the stores. I'll try to take advantage of special offers and if I get a 2 for 1 deal I'll credit it to the following week and it will all come out of the weekly housekeeping and not have to be paid for on top of it.

Good idea! I'm doing something similar in which each month I have a food group (this month protein) so each week I buy something tinned for that food group i.e. tinned mackerel (in tomato sauce - yummy!) tuna, ham and chicken. Next month 4 different tinned fruit, tinned veg, carbs, deserts etc

On a slightly different (but linked) note - I worked as a Poll Clerk for the European election on Thursday. The turnout (in a small, rural market town) was, we worked out unofficially, 22%. I would say the average age of the voters was about 65. Not a great lookout for democracy, is it? I think most people are now so cynical about politicians, totally understandably, but where do we go from here?

Local turnout was 34% - there were no council elections this time round. I've no idea of the average age of those who voted, but suspect that it wouldn't be the younger end of the range.
I wish I knew where to go from here.

Ooooooooooh 10p tomatoes !!! Where from tell us tell us! I love a good bargain like that, not too many going about! I like the way they all stacked up too, very preppy. Lovely weather over here today garden has gone mad growing. Remember my lettuces that wouldnt grow well i replanted last week more seeds as you told me too and i can see rows of them coming through the soil. I feel all maternal and protective...............
