Is another lesson on keeping your money out of banks. If they don't know about savings then you're safe.

My first priority is to clear my debts because of the real problems of debt deflation. After that to get my bug out and camping kit, so I will at least be able to take cheap holidays if things deteriorate and take to the hills if things get really bad. Then I will be keeping my accounts as empty as possible.

While I can reduce my risk by emptying out my bank accounts I cannot do anything about my pension pots and the current IMF plan is to raid private pensions if things get bad.

Bl**dy hell that's a clever search engine you're using, that can see into the future. Check out the date on that post. :)

Now that would be handy for prepping :)
  • Just caught up with the last couple of weeks' posts - a lot of RL going on at the moment but mostly in a good way. It's good weather outside so getting into the garden and potting on seedlings. Small jungle on the windowsills at the moment, if the weather holds up can take repossession of those soon. Not a good month for saving, a flurry of bills came in at once, nothing extreme but enough to put us on the wrong side of Mr Micawber. I've been reading about off-grid living, there have been a few msm reports recently about falling prices of solar panels and battery arrays and this is an interesting article about among other things the problems for mainstream energy companies when large numbers of their customers defect to off-grid living:

The problem Mar is that cash savings are eroded rapidly by inflation - you need even the small amount of interest paid by banks and building societies to preserve value (although few accounts do even that at present). Maybe precious metals might hold value, I don't know, but it would be a real gamble to put savings into gold or silver at the moment I think, if I had the necessary, which I don't... will be paying down debt for a while before savings (other than a small emergency fund) become a priority.
Thanks GQ for the mention of the uk preppers hoarding/storing thread, some good tin-hattery there for later :rotfl:

    Hello all,
Can't say I've been prepping much although the veg patch is coming along.
Decided charging around like a Looney on horse back was the name of the game today! Lovely weather and the chance to do ten miles through the countryside with beautiful scenery, two all weather gallops and loads of jumps had to be done!
Interesting discussion re windows, my house is listed and we have had all The single glazed wooden windows made by hand by a retired joiner in the village. They are not draughty at all, seal very well and with heavy curtains in winter keep the heat in. The house has loads of insulation with some bedrooms being dry lined with insulation being stuffed between that and the stone walls. The oldest part of the house has been dated as before 1560 although when refurbishing it we found the mediaeval crook frame around which the stone one was built. This part of house is like a cave in that its warm in winter but cool in summer. It has a huge inglenook with a wood burner that keeps us toasty! When levelling the floor by the fireplace we found evidence of at least three graves!!!! Decided to leave them in peace and covered them up. Apparently young children were often buried in these positions, spooky for some people but I don't mind.
Got to get going on next years logs, the timber is seasoned but in long length s not split into logs.

Loved that list of books several pages earlier, saved and printed for library visits or CS shops. Are any available free/cheap on kindle?
Anyway stay safe and well everyone still loving this thread so interesting and varied :-D

Yes I also have a google -6 months search engine. I think it is a beta. :-)

What governments actually do is dependant on whether they can push the problems down the road. Japan has managed it for more than 20 years, and I suspect that it could easily drag on here for a number of years before things collapse here. So that will give me the opportunity to be ready. I shall be debt free in little more than a year so am now thinking about long term solutions.

As I am at home most of the time I am looking at the idea of a bug out rack with everything in pack it cubes ready for rapid inclusion into a bug out bag. I think I will make it myself from wood, hence my interest in woodworking. It will allow me to make sure that I have the right items and can check everything more easily.

Thank you for the heads up.
I tried Googling info on this a few months back in relation to WW2 hoarding charges, without a lot of success. Anyone have information about what was considered hoarding then? I'm presuming that would be the model that any action is based on.

(Wondering if I can pass large jars of beans and pulses off as decorative items :) )

I have read about this a while ago. A woman was prosecuted for having something like 30lbs of sugar, hard to pass that off as your average use. I believe there were other things too, maybe tea?

Anything home bottled wouldn't be a problem as that's just preserving your own produce.

How do they know if you have a stock of stuff?....do they go round people's houses S'S style searching for it?
Yep...still at it, working out how to retire early.:D....... Going to have to rethink that scenario as have been screwed over by the company. A work in progress.
