Loving these posts re family history.
Wee warning for preppers that H1N1 is back, flutrackers full of reports from all over Europe and America. Lots of admissions to ICUs in Europe and Texas has a serious problem with packed full hospitals and no beds.

Morning all. Hope everyone is ok, & GQ and mar restored to their normal happy selves after yesterday's trials. mar, thanks for the heads up regarding H1N1. I have to go to the States next month, so will keep my ears and interweb antennae on full alert. Mr T has sent me a £15 off next interweb order, so off to stock the Armageddon Cupboard/Quarternmaster's Stores with freebie LL milk... :D

ETA: I'm also loving the family histories. While going through my mum's papers I found a few things sent from my grandad from his job in the States. He'd been a miner in Durham, transferred to work in the Met Police and then got headhunted to go and head up security for the Vanderbilts in the States. There's a momento in the form of a silver coffee pot with their family crest here. Must have been an amazing life, particularly in the 50s when it would have been even more of an adventure than today. Strangely grandad also served in the Guards at the same time as OH's grandad - wonder if they knew one another?... Nowt so strange as history, eh? Thanks for sharing the memories.

:) It's one of those things which is Duh, of course! when you think about it, isn't it? Lots of places have somewhere called The Cattlemarket in town. I read somewhere that Charing Cross is derived from "shearing cross" and is where sheep would have been traded. Or shorn. Or something -BBQ'd possibly?
    .

Now, I always thought charing cross originated due to the Eleanor crosses. Eleanor was The Wife of Edward the 1st and would follow him on his crusades. She died away from London and was brought back for burial. At each place the cortège rested overnight, a cross was erected in memorial. The last one being at charing. I have read that Charing comes from "Chere Reine" or dear Queen - though that may be a romanticism too far:rotfl: I am guessing that the real origin is a hybrid of your version and mine :D

I am trying to get tomorrow evening organised via text with pals and am about to go stark raving mad. If they don't make up their bliddy minds about the venue/ time soon, I'm gonna throw my toys out the pram and sulk at home.................:rotfl:

ETA More tangled txting! Grr! Am heading towards hypo and well p'd off. Have txted last pal to say ring me. If they CBA they can bliddy well get on without me, I'm too exhausted to waste my time faffing about like this. Oh for the olden days without instant communications when you'd make an arrangement days/ weeks in advance and bliddy well stick to it. Unless you had a broken leg/ note from yer Mum.

Excuse my ill-temper, I'm just overtired and waiting for meds to kick in. I remember why I don't like going out; it's sooooo much more hassle than staying at home.

Double GRRRRRRRR!! With knobs on!!! Exits to the tea kettle muttering darkly......

:o I've had a crying jag. Darn well hope this is menopausal hormones and I'm not turning into a crybaby at my age. Am OK now, but not 100%. Ridiculous how something can set you off when you're feeling a bit low. I'm gonna leave the pals (very old friends) to sort themselves out. If they can't or won't tough t*tty, I'm staying home on Friday night.

 I hate freaking 3-way texting marathons, it's a phone, people, you can call me or even email..............Ach, ignore the whining, I'm not good company ATM.

I can relate to your posts of yesterday so well, hope today is better and you have a much better day. I have a love hate relationship with mobiles. I hate this texting instead of actually speaking and the excuses that the phone had no signal/battery life etc when people CBA and as for turning it off why have it in the first place. Also the old "I've only just seen your text" when they have ignored your call and you've resorted to texting even though you hate to. I see mobiles as a necessary evil in this day and age but can't say I like them. I've also given up socialising and going out. If family and friends can't understand ME and my limitations so be it. Quite happy in our own little bubble at home. Had a load more blood tests to see why I'm getting worse, but have to wait a week for results.

As for the M word and hormones, I relate there too. OH doesn't really understand the emotional thing and I will be glad when it's all over. Trying to ignore it all and hope it goes away. Mum and MIL both took HRT but don't want to take stuff so I'm staying in denial and cuddling the cat.

I do think that most people lead such anti septic lives that they get no experience of the real grime out there and so can come down with anything at the first mention of it. I will admit that my home is not the cleanest or tidiest but I have barely had a day ill in my life.

Has anyone been to the Boots sale or followed the thread over the last couple of days ?

It's shocking the amount of greed and appalling behaviour witnessed and displayed by some. Now if the vultures descend on gift sets and smellies and toys etc in this way what would they be like over items that they really needed in a shtf situation. Human behaviour is truly disturbing at times and sad. I love the thrill of a bargain but after a Sunday trip to Tosco's a few years back I left the store traumatised by the behaviour of the vultures round the reduced area. I'm not easily shocked but couldn't believe my eyes that day. Not been back more than a couple of times since. Waitrose and Sainsbobs are almost as bad at times. Now get all delivered and take advantage of flash sale items with ocado, upto 60% off.

Managed to get a couple of multi tool gadgets and a couple of mag-lite torches online from boots as I needed a couple of pairs of new slippers (I tend to live in them and they were so cheap.

Total cost £20.70:j Total saving £48.30:D

I find it so difficult to resist multi tool gadgetry things and have a compulsion towards torches. I think I may be getting the same with flasks too. Popped into sainsbobs and got a thermos set for £6 instead of £20 last night. Its a small 500ml SS flask and insulated coffee mug. :D Not that It was worth £20 IMO but seemed good value at £6 and will fit in a backpack nicely with out adding too much weight
Oh dear I'm running out of space:o

I do seem to have a thing for in bag storage. I have these eagle creek bags which I store all my clothes and when travel will take them as well. They keep everything together.

That does remind me I need to look at the idea of getting more tools that will have some use around the house. Next year I am looking at the idea of making a desk well more sticking a worktop unit on a pair of cantilever legs really.

:) Thanks, seigemode, I recovered my equilibrium later last night. One pal kept ringing me til I'd pick up and was really sorry for upsetting me so badly. All good now and I had a good night's sleep.

I do find repeated exchanges of texts incredibly inefficient, esp as mates use predictive text and don't proof read so you get something nonsensical, causing another set of exchanges because they've just named a place to meet that doesn't exist in our city and I don't know what the heck we're doing.

We've got a table booked at 6pm so I'm just online for wee whiley.

ETA; came home to a letter from doctor to talk to them about my medication level; this was off the back of the whole day I spent up the hospital being tested earlier this month. Must need my droooogs tweaked. Prolly not helping the mood occasionally.

Do I get a job as resident psychic lol. Just been watching "tonight" who are showing how jobs are coming back to the UK as the chinese production is now not much cheaper than the UK (and in some cases the same price) and buyers are now as interested in quality as price and the UK tends to be better quality, plus UK production is quicker to respond to short term changes and/or small production runs, plus not having the several weeks of waiting for the stuff to be shipped around the world.

Um... also, there's a habit of chinese manufacturers not making what you ask... need to be vague to protect identities IRL but if you ask people to make blue tennis balls, you may well get a delivery of pink rugby balls. No ruddy use at all.
