Semi=skimmed milk can be frozen, make loads of batch cooking, and freeze etc...
As its all well and good having a good store cupboard etc, but I am still used to shopping most days.0 -
same here a supermarket opened up within a few steps of our houses:mad::mad::mad:, so it is easy just to nip out for milk etc, I am like you one of our freezer is full of reduced meat etc, and the other one for our own pigs, ( getting low now, as they are due to go after Christmas)
What this would do is stop me going out to get milk etc... its all well and good having enough supplies to last for months, but it actually putting it in to action, and not going out to buy more:DWork to live= not live to work0 -
No use putting everything in the freezer cos you lose the lot in a powercut. You can use powdered milk and UHT long life milk too. We do freeze milk here routinely just in case we cant get up to a shop, but just one 6-pt container..
The not going to a shop thing would suit me fine in winter as its often a faff, and this year will be a lot worse as there's major work being done on the A7 involving a lot of mud, lorries, traffic lights, and even blasting in the quarry. Chaos lol.0 -
Thinking back CTC, we came close to it (for a month) in the winter of 2010, we had 5 weeks of constant snow, no melt, and it was still here in April. I was trying not to go out at all then as it involved the whole village clearing snow to reach the main road and eventually we ran out of places to put it lol My avatar is my 5ft high wooden coal box taken that winter.0

WOW that is one heck of a situation to be in, if the whole village had to try and clear the snow....
When we eventually move to our smallholding, even though it right on the edge of a housing estate, it is on its own, and we were potentially offered a very large genie, which would be fab as back up... we have a small one at the mo, that we use for the caravan when we are away...Work to live= not live to work0 -
CTC, I have friends & rellys deep in the Canadian backwoods and up in the mountains (Dad was born in Vancouver) and I can see one problem for most of us over here; we just don't have anywhere enough storage. They generally have huge walk-in larders, filled with preserves of one sort or another by late autumn, as well as several freezers & "root" cellars. I suspect if we tried it without months of prep & adequate storage of the different kinds that different foodstuffs require, we'd be limited to a very boring & possibly even nutritionally-inadequate diet. But at least we wouldn't have to worry about bears breaking in & stealing our goodies!
Might it be worth bearing it in mind for a challenge for next winter, though, so that anyone who chose to join in could think, research & get a head-start at building up the kind of supplies you'd need to ensure enough fibre, vitamins & minerals?Angie - GC Aug25: £478.51/£550 : 2025 Fashion on the Ration Challenge: 26/68: (Money's just a substitute for time & talent...)0 -

I had just had a baby that bad winter and being stuck in the house with a baby and two small children nearly sent me loopy. I think it may have started me prepping more and now could live for a while with no shops, although I think I'd miss going shopping.
Shopping with no kids BRILL!!!!:rotfl:
On the A7 chat I heard that the police told the community council they would be stopping cars with their number plates mucky, resulting in fines and penalty points. I've been cleaning mine but on wet days it would be easy enough for them to get covered on the way to school and back. I don't see that it's very fair. You should see my car - brown with a silver roof!! I think they should have a free car wash set up.
On a not very OS note (well a little OS as the hotel is pretty cheap), I am taking the family to Whitehaven for a weekend if anyone has any suggestions of things to do?"A strong man stands up for himself, a stronger man stands up for others" Barnyard the children's film.

Update..........fairy lights have been lit for 96 hours now, still burning bright.I will be buying a lot more of them when I am next in Poundworld, they will go into my emergency box.We have elderly neighbours who are all electric and I thought I would keep a few extra in so I can pop round if there's a power cut and suggest they hang them on door handles,to avoid any falls in the night.0
