  • GQ, since you're asking, karate, jiu-jitsu, a bit of aikido, some kick-boxing, some stuff like that :o. Great fun and I met some fantastic people doing it. I'd love to take up something again if I get the chance, getting on a bit to be tangling with the youngsters though....
  • Does anyone think sprouting supplies are a good idea? Supposed to have 4 times the nutrition of regular food as far as broccoli sprouts are concerned. I have a supply of beans to sprout and the equipment and both were inexpensive. Also, would like to know what you have as far as first aid and medical supplies. I'm not sure what to stock for medical supplies. All help appreciated.:)
  • Hello sorryImoved, I have a series of plastic containers in my storecupboard with a basic range of medical supplies. We live in a remote area and 1) its good to have a range emergency supplies for if we cut ourselves etc. and 2) we don't have quick access to 24 hour supermarkets etc. for cold and flu supplies. Some of the things we have are:

    Plasters
    Bandages
    Sterile dressings
    Eye wash solutions
    Antiseptic (Dettol and creams)
    Dressing scissors
    Antiseptic wipes
    Paracetomol / Ibuprofen
    Vaseline
    Vapor Rub
    Cough Medicine
    Cold & Flu remedies
    Happy Nose
Latex gloves (sizes to fit both OH and myself)
Plus lots of other things I can't remember offhand right now. We also have emergency kits in the cars which include foil blankets.
  • PinkThrift,
Thank you. Your list had quite a few things I neglected to get.

I figure if I bean an intruder with a rolling pin it would play better in a court of law than if I went after them with a knife. After all 'respectable middle-aged woman strikes home invader with a rolling-pin' sounds so homey that I'm sure I'd get let off.

I LOVE your way of thinking! :D

Hi everyone,we have woken up to our first sprinkling of snow with crunchy ice underneath,it's bitterly cold outside.I might hibernate today as I have a day off work.
I have been sorting out our food stores,we have 3 calor fires and 9 gas cylinders,we have a ton of coal for multi fuel stove.went to poundworld yesterday and picked up some led battery operated Christmas lights,I am going to fix them under the kitchen cupboards, incase of power cuts.i managed to buy an Aga kettle at the car boot sale a few weeks ago for £3,hardly been used they are about £80 online.

    Happydays89, that's what I call a bargain!

Yes, they're an excellent idea, provided you & your family like the taste! I always have some on hand. And although the equipment isn't at all expensive, a large glass jar & a tea-towel are even cheaper & work perfectly well too. If you don't like them raw, you can always throw a handful into any soup or stew at the last moment & get most of the benefits that way.

Funny that GQ should write about people oblivious to the outside world. Most mornings, I use a crossing with traffic lights to get to work, crossing a 2 lane main road and then a feeder road that allows you to bypass the roundabout. From experience, I know that every other week, a driver will go through the red lights or someone won't indicate that they're going to pull out to use the feeder road. Or I'll be at work and I'll hear brakes screeching; the last 2 Mondays, I've stepped over bits of car mirror.

The student checking texts or emails yesterday morning while crossing the road wouldn't have stood a chance.

  • I like Alphalfa Sprouts, they're certainly the easiest to grow and 1 tablespoon of seeds produces a good jarfull of succulent crunchy sprouts which are a very good base for a winter salad, it's known as 'Tickly Salad' in our house, christened by the girls when they were small!!!

It seems that the people in more and more countries are having their right to protest removed and as for the right to generate your own power being taken away because the power companies do not like it, smacks of corporate dictatorship
