I am that ancient that my children were first given disprin - aspirin not paracetamol and literally woke up one morning and heard on the news we had to throw away children's aspirin and only give our children paracetamol only. First most of us heard that aspirin could be dangerous to children - in fact I had, had one of mine at doctors the day before and he had given me a prescription for disprin. Chemist swapped it for paracetamol as meme said as there was no children's one on the market then

    Blimey! I remember D*sprin

Very interesting thread, has got me thinking and wondering what I'd do. I live with my 7 year old DD and have oil heating but think I need the power to work to make the boiler work?!?

I've found a 20 led wind-up lantern on e&ay which looks good. From what I can see its the most powerful wind up light, am thinking of getting one:

    Hi Kittikins,

We too have oil fired central heating which does require electricity for it to work. :(

Fortunately we also have an open fire and we keep the coal and logs stocked up...so that would deal with communal heating in an emergency.

Yes, it might be very cold in the bedrooms, but generations before us have dealt with that....we have plenty of blankets and quilts to keep us warm if we need to. If necessary we could all sleep in the living room in front of the fire....that would only really be if we were in dire straits. You would understand if you were given the opportunity to share a room with my husband and sons. ;):D

Cooking...we have an electric cooker and oven so if the electricity went off for a long period we'd have problems with our normal routine. But we do have a charcoal barbeque, a bottled gas barbeque, a two ringed gas burner and a one ring gas burner....all of which have spare bottles and are easy to find.

Personal care, well they'd just have to get used to washing in cold water, or not washing at all if it came really came to that.

    Food
We have two freezers which are bunged full of food. I think I'd be really annoyed if I lost the lot in a power cut but I know the rules....

Food will last 24 hours after a power cut if the freezer isn't opened in that time.

If like me you store a massive amount of food in your freezer, make sure it is covered by your home contents insurance.

If you have space stock up on basic dried and tinned food but don't forget to rotate the stock. Also things that don't date like loo roll etc. In the unlikely event of a massive crisis water would be essential so read the previous posts about storing it.

Other off the cuff things to think of including...

Torches, radios and lights...wind ups if you can
    Candles
    Matches

I'm sure that there must be more I haven't thought of but it's very late and I'm tired so will think again tomorrow.

  • Hi sry ppl I have never been on a forum in my life so I have no idea if I'm doing this correct. I have come on here because I had my IPhone stolen yesterday so I contacted 02 and they said they would shut my phone down, I then came home and tried to use the find my IPhone app but it wouldn't work so went to bed crying, my fiance woke me up the next morning to say he was getting messages from my phone from whattsapp, they were pretty vulgar so I contacted 02 and told them about it, they said it wasnt there problem but my phone hadnt been shut down so they could stop using the internet but they would do it now, I begged them if they could trace my phone as I had all the security that they say will help track it but because the theif had disabled Icloud there was nothing they could do, I then rang police because the messages we were being sent were disgusting and when the policeman came round we then started getting messages from my actual sim card..actual text messages from my phone bragging that there was nothing I could do, I have again spoke to 02 and have the police coming out again tommorow because of the content of the things they were saying ( i have pictures of my son in my phone) 02 swear this is not there problem, can anybody help me?? x

    Hi,

I understand that this must be distressing for you; but you need to make a new thread (the link's at the top when you go into the forum) to ask for help as it won't be seen by the most appropriate people here. I think the 'Phones, web and TV' board might be your best bet. I know it's worrying but this will get sorted and hopefully the police will be able to give you the resolution you're looking for. Set up a new thread and try to get some sleep, hopefully things will look a big better in the morning :grouphug:

Pink you moved the furniture while I was sleeping and I'm lost now ! :D
Ok, could we try another scenario now.. what about this one -
It's summertime in the city, and everybody is in their gardens or on balconies enjoying the sun. You live in the suburbs & are out in the back garden with the kids - hubby is away playing golf or fishing. You hear sirens and take no notice as there are always sirens in a city and you assume it's a fire.
The radio is on and you hear a newsflash - a fire at a chemical works has released poison gas and they want people to evacuate immediately. You take no notice because you don't know of any chemical works nearby. Then a loudspeaker booms out in the street, followed minutes later by a policeman who comes round the side of the house telling people they have minutes to leave the area, the wind is blowing the gas in this direction. He says you have 15 mins to get out of the affected zone, then he goes onto next door.
You're in flipflops, the kids are in shorts, the dinner is cooking, the breadmaker is on, the dog and cat are snoozing in the shade, hubby is away....
    What do you do?

My first reaction would be to turn everything off, pile everyone in the car and go.....where? Also I would assume it's just for a few hours.

On reflection, It could be for a lot longer and it takes a bit more thought....I need a cup of tea for this one!
