Gonna do some archery this weekend............I knew you'd understand the allure.:rotfl:I may be pants at it, or I may take it up. I can see it on my CV now; Hobbies; reading, writing and impersonating Errol Flynn.

Hubby and I are doing archery this weekend too! We did a session about 6 months ago and are going again as I would really like to get a bow. Hubby has air rifles, those don't appeal to me though I am a fair shot, but archery really draws me :)

I may convince hubby that buying me a bow is a useful prepping measure, despite having nowhere to practise. I reckon anyone trying to raid the house would run a mile if arrows rained down on them, no matter how badly aimed. Though I would like to get good at it for hunting (not legal here now btw, but one SHTF no one will care).

Another 5ltr water bottle and few more tins added to cupboard, plus a large bottle of brandy (multipurpose :) ). Hubby bought some large fuel carriers and we now have some extra stashed too (have checked legality and safety of storage, petrol is strictly controlled but diesel you can pretty much so what you like with!). My reasonign with this is, if we keep both cars half full plus a car load in the garage we could siphon half into another, load up the rest and be able to get over 1000 miles away (if ever we needed to, hopefully not!).

Anyone doing the 'Food Storage Made Easy' challenge? I think it will be in the next few days. I may only think through a few scenarios but it will certainly help highlight any weak areas (we have many!).

Just in the middle of reading this

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-24184728

I have been thinking this for a few days now... I am prepping for food/cost of living price increase etc..

But what if there was a financial crash in this country to the extent we cant get our money out of the banks etc Like some EU countries over the last year or so???
We've been fairly close on a few occasions and will no doubt get closer until it actually happens.
From a personal safety view your money is safer in a bank, BUT if this type of thing did happen here, we are better keeping our money out of the banks, and buying everything with cash...
I'm not sure I agree that you're safer with your money in a bank.
At some point you need to withdraw money, ATMs are watchable easy targets. If you brag about granny's thousands being under your mattress, then you make yourself a target. If you are discrete about having money in the house, you are no more a target than you would be anyway for burglars and the like.
I personally think the government are not telling how close we are sailing to the wind financially... as they know most people will try and take their money out of the banks, ( a bit like northern rock) ....

sorry if you have had this conversation before

Many conversations are worth continuing and or repeating, this is certainly one of them.
Even with the new regulations which are increasing the levels of retained assets, no bank can repay all its deposits on demand - it wouldn't take much in the way of rumours before there was a run on any bank.
Heck, last bank holiday weekend, local folk were panicking because the hole in the walls were running out of cash - the result being that all the ATM's in town ran out of cash as people pulled the maximum they could and then told their family and friends to do likewise.

I wonder if the amount of cash being withdrawn from cashpoints is significantly more than the amount being spent. (In other words, people no longer trusting the banks, and stashing it at home somewhere.)

By the way, if anyone is thinking of doing that, I would beware of £50 notes. 50 & 100 Ruble notes were declared worthless (virtually) overnight in the USSR in 1991.

  • Nuatha aaaa yes didn't think of people watching you at the cashpoint....

I think with everything these days including the banks everything is working on the 'Just in time' delivery/stock levels etc... and a tiny little blip/rush will show how week the system actually is..

You notice it when there is a flurry of snow, within half hour the supermarket carpark is full, and everyone is buying bread etc as though they will be stuck in for a month......

so any sort of murmur of a financial collapse and within minutes there would be mayhem, people clamouring to get their money out of banks etc, people buying food, fuel etc...

food storage made easy challenge?????? where will I find that??

I never ever use an 'in the street' cash point, I had a card cloned once and now I go into the bank building and will only get cash from the indoor ones and even then I'm pretty cautious and keep everything covered, including the anount of money that comes up both on the screen and out of the dispenser. I always make sure the money is out of sight in my purse and that my purse is firmly at the bottom of my rucksack which is securely on my back before I leave the building. I save £1 and £2 coins which come in change (so I'm never seen obviously getting cash and then walking home) and they are dotted about in different places all round the homestead, I keep a couple of very obvious notes pinned up on a noticeboard in full sight, easy to find if you're an opportunist burglar and I'm prepared for that to be the case, it usually is and they're in and out quickly with what they can find easily. A little insurance if you like!

  • Oh eck WCS, this year I'm definately going to maximise on the heat from the woodstove and use it to cook supper as well as heat the house. We don't light up until mid afternoon so we'll have to have a sandwich and a cuppasoup for lunch, I can use the kelly kettle for hot water, I think a lot of folks are either going to be very cold or deep in debt after this coming winter!!! Not Good is it? Cheers Lyn xxx

reading through the last years' ones is really interesting, you get to read people's accounts of how they got on with it.

In Uganda the currency had so been devalued, you needed wads of notes. I used to put mine in a bog standard carrier bag - I'm sure I was fooling no one! A white person going into a bank stood out somewhat. I cultivated the art of listening and watching everything around me. To this day I'm aware of footsteps behind me and if someone has been there a little too long, I take a turn or stop.
As for cashpoints I once saw a guy hanging round a supermarket cash machine. Everytime someone had used it he would go up to the machine. He did this several times so Pineapple smelled a rat and alerted security.
