Beaujolais, where did you get waterglass from? I tried smallholding suppliers and chemists but no joy
I haven't used it since I was a child (to create a "magic" crystal water garden) but it seems to be possible to buy it on-line, eg here

De-lurks to say wonder if those plastic boxes you get dishwasher/wm tabs in might be good for storing tea lights ?Nothing is so fatiguing as the eternal hanging on of an uncompleted task. William James0

Hi everyone!
This is my first forum posting, just joined today really but i have been reading this thread and others (mostly on OS) before registering.
I am originally from Spain but i have been living in UK for over 9 years now, i work as Cabin Crew which means i am away from home quite often.
However over the last couple of years i have been more and more worried about how things are going at the moment, my mother has a business back home, she put all of her life savings into it and on top of that the family home was used as insurance towards business loans.... it means she is about to loose everything but still fighting and hopefully this september one of the biggest loans will b paid off and then the business will, if not make money, pay for itself.
I live with my partner and we have a morgage on a end of terrace cottage, with a decent garden. we also have about 15.000 pound worth of debt on top of the morgage, slowly being paid. My partner could not be any more oblivious to what would happen if for any reason we couldnt afford food, or anything happened to prevent us from getting it, But i am slowly building a stock of food (nothing impressive but enough for a couple of weeks) and i have started growing tomatoes (fingers crossed, looking OK so far), and we have an apple tree, hardly enough but hey! its a start.
This thread has inspired me in many ways, and i am slowly reading all 500+ pages of it, you all seem a very resourceful bunch and i am learning with every read.
Thank you for all the info and i will carry on posting my progress into prepping, bear in mind sometimes i am away for a while but ill b back!Life comes with many challenges. The ones that should not scare us are the ones we can take on and take control of.0 -
Hello SPANISHLIVINGINUK welcome to the thread, please pop in and join us whenever you are around, lovely to have you with us. We are all still learning too, everyone has new and different takes on things and all of them are useful to someone, so life is a learning curve even for the most dedicated prepper amongst us, Cheers Lyn x.0

The EU reportedly has agreed with "overwhelming majority" that from 2016, savers must bleed in event of a bank failure. Deposits over 100.000 euros are then gone. EU Law Committee: Cyprus was a model."
Can you believe it?0 -
Hello spanishlivinginUK and welcome to the thread,
I am also new here and new to prepping in general. Like you I was lurking through the posts as well, the tips and advice here are really helpful. Everyone seems very friendly so far. Sorry to hear that your mother is going through a difficult time at the minute. These are unsure times we are going through at the moment.
lyrolee Sadly I believe it completely and utterly. It is because of the EU trying to (in my eyes) steal from savers in Cyprus that made me start to prep seriously. I do not trust european economies one bit and the USA economy is not looking very stable either at present. Worrying times ahead. I wish google would translate the comments from German to English as well as the article, it would be interesting for me to find out how they view this latest move.'Look after the pennies and the pounds will look after themselves'0 -
You are quite welcome bornintoit.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask.
Just remember the single most important rule for packing a rucksack, which is, never have an empty container (Mess Tin, Cup, whatever) in there.
If you can't think of anything to put in it, put in some fishing tackle, boiled sweets, bags of peanuts, spare bandages, anything.
If nothing else, fill it with a bag of cotton wool.
Empty space is a sin.0 -
One thing I would recommend to everyone; a bum mat AKA a kneeling mat - often a £1 ish from the £1 store.
If you are sitting down outside, you will lose heat rapidly even with a survival blanket.
Also think about footwear - thick soles insulate much better.
So if you end huddled up trying to sleep sitting down with thick soles and a bum mat, you have a decent chance. if your feet are freezing and you are lying on cold ground, you will not sleep. If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -
Please could you help me with my first aid kits. I have 2, one in house and one in car.
They consist of:
Triangle bandage & pins
Wrap bandage
Dressing
Micro pore tape
Plasters
Scissors
Is there any thing I have missed that would be recommended in either?
Also thinking about winter preps (I know, sorry!!! Just I need to budget everything closely every month) and will be re-assembling, replacing items from last years car box for DH's car and getting everything for my car (didn't have a car last year)
Oklahoma brings home that we can only do what we do and can never be prepared for every eventuality but come what may in a generic crisis I shall give my family a fighting chance.0
