 OMG, that census gathering is downright scary. I can think of no good reason why the US Government would need that level of information and plenty of bad ones. Such as mass confiscations. It is very easy to see that the seizure of privately-held resources such as foodstuffs and allied goods would be "justified" on the grounds of redistribution to the needy in a time of crisis. And equally predicatable that the needy would include the military which was tasked with seizing it.
I think it behooves all sensible people to keep as much control over their lives as possible, and if this means being a touch evasive with such intrusiveness, so be it. We all need to know enough history to be aware that governments have often acted in the worst interests of the general populace, and to extend to them and their agents the wariness which you would give to a large and powerful hound of dubious temperament.
Hello and welcome, bornintoit. Just keep her steady as she goes and remember, any level of prepping is better than no prepping. You can get 2 litre bottles of water for 17p each atm. A few of those around the place will be a great help in an emergency.
I have been allotmenteering and also nipped into a Liddly. You can't get tommie puree there this weekend, which makes it fortunate that I had some, as I needed it yesterday. I'm working on my preps little by little, and keeping a low profile.
What I have found is that if you buy several cans/ packets of the same product at the same time, checkout operators tend to remark on it. I have no problem with remarks and am on affable terms with my local check-out personages, but one might not want to be remembered as the nutjob with all the tins if/when the balloon goes up.
We have an incoming bank holiday at the end of May. Fun things have happened on this bank holiday before (in its former guise as Whitsun, TPTB sprang clothes rationing on the populace during WW2).
I shall organise myself to have all but a wee bit of my wages out of my account for that weekend, just in case.
Yesterday, my family had a micro-crisis sprung on them due to a medical issue which involved two hours of additonal driving, over and above what had been expected. Fortunately, the car was fuelled up but it could have been a PITA if it wasn't and there wasn't the means to pay for it.
Hokay, time for tea. Going to prod summat to see if it's cooked. If it screams, it ain't ready..............:rotfl:Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

take a look at the whitehose link on that page OMG!

Of course the usual reasons are given for needing such info but it doesn't wash. I can see the use of mapping what food is produced and where - but not in that amount of detail. Beyond scary.
It seems we do collate data but I don't believe it is anything as detailed

I couldn't believe this so I checked it out and yes it's true! Even worse you are required to provided this information if you have $1000 or more of agricultural sales in the year - which defines you as a farm for the purposes of the census.

I shall be discreetly going about some preptastic business tomorrow after work, keeping up the supplies of various things. With the time of year, it's a good time to be looking in the cheaper stores for camping supplies (£land, 99p Store, Wilko and others I'm sure). Lots of appropriate stuff. I did pretty well at Wilko's late summer sale but if you're a bit antsy, you may not want to wait that long before getting some stuff in.
I need to work on my domestic medical supplies, such as OTC painkillers, topical ointments and similar. I'm blessed not to suffer with hayfever etc but for those for whom it is a major problem, it may be worth getting some stuff in, in quantities you can use before the BB date (don't mess with the dates on meds, it's not worth the risk). Will also be looking to top up the antibac gels. Oh, and Sudocrem seems to be a universal panacea and is available in dinky tubs.............
Lyme disease is present in several parts of the UK and is spread by ticks. You can get proprietary tools from outdoor shops for tick removal, but this relies on vigilence in checking your body for the little blighters. They can get in the darndest of places, such as under your waistband and under your watch strap. If I'm walking in Lyme-infected areas, I'm Mrs Paranoid about them. You have 48 hours to get them off before they transmit Lyme, and a limited window to get the correct treatment.
I can well recall the Weil's Disease scare in the drought summers of the 1970s and once spoke to a bloke who had a managerial role in the regional water company. He told me of a man known to him personally, a worker on the rivers, who'd been reduced by Weil's from a great strapping ox of a man in the prime of life to a wreck who could barely walk and who was lucky to be alive.
I guess we all know that you remove bee stings by brushing the sting away (such as with a bank card on something similarly flat) not using tweezers which squeezed the venom from the sting into your flesh. Tweezers are OK for wasp stings, though.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

Greyqueen as usual you speak a lot of sense! BTW (and slightly off topic) I joined a stitching group a few weeks ago - we meet fortnightly and there is a lovely lady who attends who is the spitting image of my mental picture of you. I have to work VERY hard at calling her Sue, not Greyqueen!
Anyway - water storage. I have not a lot of room for this and not a lot of money to keep replacing bottled water, so have come up with a method of making sure we have at least a few litres of water about us at all times.
We use at least one six pint (3 litre) plastic bottle of milk every two days, sometimes more. So what I do is every time I have an empty milk bottle, I wash it well, fill it with water, write the date on the bottle with marker pen and store in a dark cupboard. I have room for 6 bottles. Whenever I get a new bottle (so every other day really) I remove the oldest, use the contents to water the houseplants or garden pots then put in the recycling bin. This way none of the water is very old, none gets wasted and I'm using containers that I already have.People Say that life's the thing - but I prefer reading
