It wasn't all warm beer and bad haircuts, oh dearie me no. I have got a book from the chazzer called "When the lights went out; Britian in the Seventies " by Andy Beckett which I am going to read to give me a thorough grounding in the whys and wherefores of what I experienced as a nipper.

That book is excellent:D I was a teenager in the early 70's, went to college in the late 70's so a lot of detail passed me by, simply because there was so much going on:rotfl:

Quilters, you may have seen this, if so, apologies for the repeat... how to get the maximum amount of fabric from a shirt.

PP, you're very right about anticipating that rural areas would be last on the list to be re-instated to power supply. Or, I suspect, supplies of anything, inc Lauran Order, would be focussed on the large populations of towns and cities.

I live in a city centre and they get us back up and running in only a few minutes in the rare cases of power outages. My Nan lives of the very edge of a large village. Powercuts are a lot more frequent there, esp storms causing branches to come down onto overhead powerlines, and she has been left without power for days at a time. Yes, there's some compensation for the longer outages, but it's still very inconvenient esp at her great age.

If the power goes out in my neck of the woods, the traffic lights go out, too, and these are prioritised to keep the city moving.

Cities are incredibly vulnerable to gridlock, which is something to bear in mind if you ever have to evacuate one by vehicle.

I've personally seen someone stop on a double-yellow in the city centre and cause a traffic jam in under 10 seconds. And this is normal, everyday road use, not some SHTF mass evac with mucho panic.

There's an article on the Daily Wail's website atm about Thames Water's prediction of water shortages. I used to know a bloke who was a water scientist for the regional water company here. I remarked that my neighbourhood is seeing a lot of housing development on former factory sites and wondering if the sewers and water infrastructure have to be improved in tandem with the increase of thousands of extra people using them?

Apparently, they don't. The water company can make representations but do not have to be heeded by planning authorities and developers. It seems to be very negligent, if it is true.:(

OK you lot - I want to complain....

I'm sitting @ work half asleep, bags under my eyes and unable to concentrate as I just want to go home & carry on where I left off..

WHO RECOMMENDED "LAST LIGHT" - as this is your fault :D

Mr Amazon delivered both it & After Light yesterday - so I was up half the night last night reading "just another chapter" not caring that I had work today.....now I care.

And also - I'm now praying for rain so that I can read all weekend & not feel I should be in the garden.

Must go now & try & do some work before rushing home @ exactly 5pm:p

I was a lass in the 70's, when I'm sure we had proper summers, and spent alot of time on bicycles 'making our own fun'. (EEh when I was a lass...ok I'm officially old)
I'm sure my parents can't have had alot of money cos I can remember eating alot of veg!! Leek and potato pie:D salads all summer and my mum baking tonnes of pies and cakes on a sunday afternoon for packed lunches in the week. (I guess thats why I love HM pies so much)
I've still got my parents fuel ration card from the seventies.
Have found an amish rhubarb pie recipe if anyone would be interested, its like it has custard mixed in, yum. (only two slices at dinnertime) and its handy for using rhubarb.(I like that word, can't be sad with a word like rhubarb around) :D
