Cashing in endowment

Hoping someone can help. I have an endowment that is 16 years old with Prudential i currently pay £41.20 per month. Luckily it isn't tied to my mortgage so was keeping it as a type of savings. However we need to purchase a new car and options are loan, re mortgage or cash in endowment to pay for it. I have called prudentila and redemption figure is £7634...i have put in £7828...so very dissapointed in this figure. I know its life cover but i have seperate cover including a work cover so feel secure for kids should anything happen. My question is should i sell my endowment rather than go through Prudential and if so where is a safe place for me to do so? Any advice would be greatly appreciated
Thank YOu

Jenny P,I commented earlier to someone else regarding my Endowment which matured a few weeks back,i paid £22 per month for 25 years, got all the letters advising it would not cover my initial mortgage of 16K.
We paid the mortgage off years ago so contrary to what we was advised we kept paying the installments and the final cheque i recived to my amasement was 17K0
