Help! Unsure of what to do about having to miss sigining on

Hi there,

I recently graduated from university and I am looking for work. I have now got my signing on day however I will probably have to miss one. This is due to having an interview in Surrey a few days before and I am travelling a long way to get there and back. Once down there I will be visiting my long term boyfriend for the week whilst looking for jobs in the area. Because of this I won't be back in time to sign on, what should I do? If I miss it or tell them why I am missing it will my allowance be stopped? I am new to all this and I'm not sure if wanting to spend some time with my boyfriend will be a valid excuse despite the fact I will be looking for work there. Thanks.

You can sign on in Surrey. You need to ask them in advance of your signing on date.

:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p
  • Thanks for that! I wasn't sure if I would be able to sign on there for just the one week or not.

Just ring your job centre and explain. Your situation isn't unique.

Wanting to spend time with your boyfriend is not a valid excuse but wanting to attend an interview and then to look for work in the area where you could move to as your boyfriend lives there, is. So be careful what you tell the job centre.

You should inform the JCP exactly what you are doing, going for an interview and taking advantage of the location to visit your BF. There will be no problem with this.

You just need to complete a Going Away in the UK form which will excuse you signing until you return, you must make sure you tick 'yes' to all of the questions around availability and actively seeking work. However you will not get paid until you return and sign.

Alternatively as said above you can ask you JCP if they will authorise you to sign on in the local JCP where you are going. If yes, you should go to the local JCP and request an appointment for ES90 action, they will sign you and fax the document through to your home JCP who will then release your payment.

    Hope this info helps.
