When you submit your tax return, there is a section on the self employed pages to claim your losses and request they are carried back and used in earlier years against other income(can't remember the number of the boxes in that section at the moment). Once you lossses are agreed the revenue should apply these losses to the particular year claimed against and calculate if a refund is due. You may have to stipulate which year you want them set against?

You could call the HMRC who would help you fill in the relevant boxes.
