All depends on where you live, and what you call 'basic living costs' some people will call a mobile phone, sky tv. games console and a huge flat screen, all singing and dancing, dishwasher etc as 'basic living'

But what ever income you have coming in to your household, you find people live/spend what income you have, so if you are on 50k a year, you will spend it, if you have only 10k a year you will spend it...

basically the more you have the more you will spend....
Work to live= not live to work

There are a lot of people out here on less than half of that.
We are only just over half that income..
    How the other half live..

I think you need to read the report again.

This is NOT a figure suggested as being required to be just above the poverty line - ie below which you can't afford to eat or heat your home.

The figure of £36k is the suggested gross income required for a family of four to have a "socially acceptable" standard of living. That is to say they are not just "getting by" and "existing", they feel they actually have enough money to do the things they want to do like go on family holidays, have a car, and the latest gadgets etc.

The difference between merely existing and actually having an enjoyable comfortable life.

Both parents working full time on £18k pa gross? Sounds about right to me for a reasonably comfortable lifestyle with two kids.

No it isn't. It's for the "comfortable" lifestyle that most families aspire to achieve.
  • yeah i guess its for the expected life standard that society expects , just a standard life style
but it does quote it has risen by 1/3 since 2008 which isnt a good thing

    I agree.

It's just a shame so many people have jumped on the poverty and benefits-bashing bandwagon when the article isn't even about that - it's about "working families, pensioners and single people of working age on a range of incomes".

  • Lucky them, we are a family of 4 living on a collective income of just over £12,000 a year and we get no HB or CTB.
