Can I get a student loan for a part time degree if I already took out a student loan?
I went to university in 2004 and I took out a student loan. However I didn't complete my degree, I dropped out after one year. But I have never repayed the years loan because I have never earnt over 15,000 a year. I am now wanting to do a part time degree in sept and I want to know whether I am entitled to a loan or not? And whether it makes a difference what my household income is and that I have a child? Can't find the answer to this anywhere online and I'm really stuck....

Part time students are now allowed to apply for loans to help with just the tuition fees element (but not the living costs element).
It used to be the case that if you have had a student loan in the past and withdrew from the course then you will usually not get tuition fees help for the full number of years of your new course. Eg if your new course is 3years and you already studied for a year you would usually only get 2years student loan tuition fees. I think its the first year you would have to pay yourself.
(I don't know whether this last paragraph would still apply this is how it used to be).A smile enriches those who receive without making poorer those who giveor "It costs nowt to be nice"0 -
Thank you for that. Is there a phone number that I can ring to find out? I've been looking online but arnt sure which number. Thank you very much for your help!0

It is a bit different now.
Just putting this as a holding post for now, but I'll post up a lot more information and entitlement details tomorrow.
Can you confirm in the meantime if you were awarded any qualification?0 -
Thank you. No I wasn't awarded any qualification.0

Three years ago, you would receive fees support for four years, minus the number of years you've already completed (so you would be eligible for three years' worth of loans). That was the situation three years ago when I started my second degree. Tixy is right in saying that, if you have to pay for any of it yourself, that comes first before you're eligible for any loans.
I'm not sure if it's still the same now, but I struggled to find the information back when I was looking, and wrote a letter to the LEA asking for confirmation. I know they'll be different depending on where you live, but it's worth calling/writing to your LEA and asking them directly. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. LEA's do not exist any more for HE funding.
Believe the OP will be eligible for the full duration of studies for some support with fees. Awaiting a copy of the PT guidance from SFE though before can comment exactly what entitlement will be.0 -
I did the same thing. Completed 1 year of degree with funding but dropped out and 2 years later completed a 3 year degree. Got the max funding for everything. This was 2008-2011 (first degree 2006). Never had a problem when claiming for the second time.Comping Since June 2016
