C&G nightmare - completion at risk

Hi and wonder if anyone can help me or has any inside info...
Accepted offer just under 8 weeks ago on our house. Our mortgage offer with HSBC is through fine and we are ready to exchange. Completion is supposed to be this Thursday!!!!
Our buyer still hasn't got a mortgage offer. They said (c&g that is) 6 days ago they had everything they needed then on Friday they wanted something else, having told our buyer 6 days ago that the offer would be there by last weekend.
Now end Monday and still nothing. We were told that tomorrow lunchtime was last poss offer in order to meet Thurs, but I have heard of exchange and completion on same day before.
What can we do and what is happening when they say it's with underwriters? Is that a fob off or likely to be genuine? Original completion date was a week ago, and we will be abroad from Saturday for two weeks so just unbelievably stressed. Can anyone help or does anyone know anybody at C&G who could help get this over the line? Thanks all!
