Is bigger really better?

Hi
My parents currently have a JVC TV (approx 20" wide), its 15 years old, has no scart socket but is just about working (the power switch broke the other week) so as you can see its on its last legs. This tv is used in the lounge by everyone.
My brother has just replaced his mikomi 15" bedroom tv with a samsung 23" lcd hd ready tv and my parents are considering replacing their 15 YEAR OLD JVC tv with his old 15" flatscreen tv that looks like a computer monitor!! This was bought from argos and was the cheapest one available 2 years ago!
Do you think it is acceptable to have a 15" tv in a lounge which will be used most often as the main tv in the house?
My parents seem to think that a 15" tv will suffice as this was all that was available in the 80's when they used to have a cheap plastic one (it was probably black and white though). I have reminded them that this is 2007 and that times have changed, they seem to think that they 'will be able to get another years use out of the current one'.
What does everyone else think?

TBH it would all depend on the room size and how much one can afford. It ifs a smallish room a 28" will suffice, medium 32" and large room 40".
I have a 26" LCD which is around a 30" CRT (old type tv) fine in my old house with smallish room, but too small for a medium/large room now. I am looking at a 37" to 40" LCD to replace it. Prices have plummet and I done with out a lot of things of last 6 months so we are gonna have a nice treat when we find tv we want.
Personnel I also think 15" is fine for a bedroom but not living room but it really depends on you personnel circumstances0 -
also remember that a 16:9 tv will look totally different in a room than a 4:3.
a 32" 16:9 has the same screen height as a 26" 4:3.0 -
Well, I've gone from a 28" flat screen in a large room to a 14" portable in a small one, to a 28" LCD in the small room - and yes, bigger is better! (As is the amazing ampont of space you save with an LCD).
How about asking your brother to bring his new one downstairs temporarily, and have the 3 sets on side by side so your parents can see the difference for themselves, in the surroundings they would be watching in?
I'd never go back to a small, TV-shaped set now!
Mel.Though no-one can go back and make a brand-new start, anyone can start from now and make a brand-new ending.

My ex had a 3" I've traded him in for an upgrade......:)0

surely your parents have the right to choose, if you want a bigger one you will have to pay for it yourself?0

Personally I think bigger is better but everybody is different. What your parents want and the actual room size should be the main deciding factors.0

If your parents are happy with it then thats up to them ,maybe if you feel that strongly you could treat them:rolleyes:#6 of the SKI-ers Club :j

I'm presuming by "flatscreen" you mean LCD, as a normal CRT wouldn't look like a computer monitor.
The viewable on a 20 inch CRT will only have been about 18.5 inches anyway. I reckon if you move the sofa 2 feet closer to the screen you won't notice the difference .......... everyone's a winner!!!!!
I'm sure your Mum & Dad will see ALL the answers you get here - not just the ones that support your argument.
Edit : Looking at your previous posts however, you appear to be a working mum with at least one son at secondary school. I'm not sure it's your place to be questioning your Mum and Dad's decisionAll the World is a Stage; and I'm going through a difficult one at the moment!0 -
I've had a 14" tv in the living room before. It was far too small. You can pick up cheap 24" widescreen crt tv's on ebay. That might be fine if they don't want a 32" one.0
