When to hand in notice?

Is email confirmation of a job offer deemed acceptable for me to hand my notice in at my current job? Or should I really wait until I have received the letter through the post?
Don't want to keep my new employer waiting any longer than necessary but also don't want to shoot myself in the foot by handing in my notice before receiving the official letter.

No matter what, ensure any offer is unconditional before progressing.Don’t be a can’t, be a can.0

I would wait for the written offer. Just in case it turns out to be a conditional offer, or has other items in it which you may not have been expecting.0

I would wait for the written letter.
Years ago the company I worked for were recruiting for lots of staff for a new contract and a rival company 'poached' one of the staff who was due to commence employment with us. As soon as he told us he would not be joining us the other company denied all knowledge of ever offering him a job! Luckily we were aware of their underhand tactics and my boss saw sense and still let him come to us.0 -
Thanks, all. I think I'll wait for the letter. When offered the job on the phone no mention of the job being "subject to" anything (even references) but I really just want something in writing to confirm the job is mine!0

Make sure you know the terms, hours, pay, holidays etc.
If the offer is not unconditional then they are making you wait, not you making them wait.0
