    Glad to see that some sense seems to be entering the Tories actual policy and not the rhetoric. This country needs immigrants whether people like it or not.

    There was never a widespread public opinion in opposition to immigration until the EU floodgates opened.

    Comments such as "this country needs immigrants whether people like it or not" indicate a poor understanding of the situation. Immigration has made a huge contribution to the development and economy of this country, but what we have now is an open border policy; the Goverment don't even know how many are here.

    Immigration is something that we need, but should be in control of. But it's the EU who control our immigration policy, we only have the power to control non-EU immigration (and we don't do a great job at that).

    In addition;

    - the EU prevents us from deporting foreign crminals, including terrorists, extremists, rapists and organised crime gangs.

    -EU law overides British law, more than 75% of our laws are now made in Brussels and the UK is powerless against this - Parliment can debate them but they can't change a word.

    - and of course the EU free movement of people allows thousands of unskilled workes to enter the country while we have 3 million unemployed.

    All these fantastic advantages come from our membership of the EU political union which costs us a mere 17.5 billion each year.

    Australia seems to be doing pretty well with much tighter immigration controls than we have here.
    Try attempting to settle there without a job already lined up and someone who will support you if you cannot support yourself.
    In addition, companies are not permitted to offer employment to an immigrant if there is an Australian capable of doing the job.

    Yeah and my OH's mum still moans about all the Fijians, Lebanese, Somalis and most of all "Asians" who are allowed in and ruin the place. It's like being at my parents house except they have tiles instead of carpets and you get cancer if you go outside.

    Non-EU sponsored jobs have always had the resident labour market test

    This was removed when Labour introduced the Highly Skilled Migrant Programme to encourage workers to relocate here. When numbers became uncontrollable, they changed it to the Points-Based Migration.
