Hello, I wonder who can help?
My DH works four day shifts ( supposed to be 6am to 6pm), then four off, then four night shifts (supposed to be 6pm to 6am).
When he wants to take holiday, he has to take 6 days - one from the beginning and end of the shift, when he actually only gets four off - he doesn't get the one t the end and beginning of each shift off - but they are taken from his holiday allowance.
He regularly has to work until 8pm when on days shift - finishing up paperwork.
Last month, he finished a set of 4 night, was sent on a training course for two days straight away, had two days off and went straight back onto days.
I feel like someone somewhere is taking the mickey.
Any advice, please?

He is entitled to a minimum of 19.6 days/shifts paid leave at 12hrs per shift. This can be rounded up by the employer but not down.Be Alert..........Britain needs lerts.0

let's say:
day one - he works a day shift
day two - he works a day shift
day three - he works a day shift
day four - he works a day shift - comes home about 8pm.
day five - rest day
day six - rest day
day seven - rest day
day eight - rest day
day nine - he works a night shift
day ten - he works a night shift
day eleven - he works a night shift
day twelve - he works a night shift, and comes home at 7am on day thirteen.
day thirteen - rest day
etc etc.
But, then he wants holiday and this holiday falls on a 4 day shift pattern:
day one - he works a day shift
day two - he works a day shift
day three - he works a day shift
day four - he works a day shift - comes home about 8pm.
day five - rest day
day six - rest day
day seven - rest day
day eight - rest day

day fifteen - rest day
day sixteen - rest day
etc etc.
But on his holiday application from, he is being made to take holiday from day eight to day thirteen.
Does that make sense?

That's what I immediately thought. Have they kept the holiday system in 'days' instead of hours meaning they still give him 28, 8 hour days. However they have then realised that this means when he wants 4 days off (48 hours) he effectively needs to book of 6, 8 hour days in order to make 48 hours, ie 6x8=48.

Telling us what he has to book doesn't actually help us work out whether this is because he's being paid for 6 shorter holiday days when he's taking 4 longer work days off.
So, how many days' holiday entitlement does he have each year?

sounds like the 6 days are a red herring. he is entitled to a min of 19.6 days, round up to 20 but is given 30, these extra 10 account for the days at the beginning and end of his hols.
5 weeks at 4 days=20 days.

Should be getting paid if working extra days to do training, if not getting paid they should not be using holiday
I think you need to find out what the real details are, anything written in the contract or staff handbooks etc?
one issue with holidays is they can be descrined in many ways and it is not always cler if the methods used by an employer fit into the legislation.
A lot of companies have policies that are no ,onger valid since they were not updated to meet legilation changes.0
