I am so scared about this debt, it's ruining my future.

I wouldn't worry about it. I have a student loan that I've been paying since I graduated in 2008. It comes out of my salary and I treat it like a tax, I never miss it. The loan will have no impact on me getting a mortgage nor will it affect my partner - he also has a student loan. The student loan will not appear on your credit record whereas a consolidation loan will.

In short, don't stress. It will get paid off as you earn more. It took a few years for me to start making 'decent' payments to it. Student loans from SLC are not a type of debt you should be worried about.
