  • Hats off to your Grandma POSESSION, and there is a time for all things, if she can maintain her independence by having ready prepared meals that's only right and the sensible thing to be doing. What amazes me is the number of people my age and younger who just cannot be bothered to bother if that makes any sense. I know lots of couples whose kids have flown the nest who say 'oh there are only the two of us, it doesn't seem worth all the bother for just us' , why? I just don't understand. My days are busy and fulfilling, I know it's my choice to do all the things I do and I enjoy it. Most of those others only seem to get pleasure from going shopping and spending. I guess it depends on which field you are in as to what you do. One of lifes imponderables eh? Cheers Lyn x.

My grandma still cooks but things like ready chopped veg are a godsend to her because of her arthritis. My Grandad loves his cakes so i bake for him weekly, my gran can't bake anymore.

A friend came round for a brew the other day and as soon as she walked in she says "Oh that smells lovely, what is it?" i told her it was Chicken casserole in the slow cooker and she said she really needed to start cooking more often as her and her DH added up and last month they spent £250 in takeaways :eek::eek:
They have one every Saturday without fail, sometimes Friday too and midweek they might have a McD's and chippy. When you're feeding 2 adults (her DH's job is very physical so he has a big appetite) and 3 kids it adds up to a lot per meal. I advised her to keep the Saturday night takeaway as a treat if they can afford it, why not? But to drop the mid-week ones and gave her some ideas for slow cooker meals for when she is busy/can't be bothered. Even buying ready diced meat, chopped veg and a packet mix to throw in the slow cooker is still cheaper than £20+ per meal for a takeaway.

    K xx

I have a vision of the trooper I would like to see myself as being as I age but really aware that it might not turn out that way.

I'll be hugging my slow cooker where ever they cart me off too ;)
  • FUDDLE - look after today, let tomorrow look after itself what's that saying 'Don't borrow trouble, it'll find you soon enough'! You're prepared to put in the work to keep you and yours healthy, you'll be OK , Cheers Lyn x.

Trouble is my grandma can't peel potatoes etc or even cut them up, plus she'd never be able to wash up a slow cooker, it would be too heavy for her to lift out. She has very severe osteoperosis and is so fragile now. Really she shouldn't be living on her own but at the moment she won't contemplate anything else....the time is fast coming when the decision may have to be taken out of her hands unfortunately. She's always been a feisty woman and everyone is dreading it. : (
She was the only grandma I knew who used to go on walking holidays etc so she was very fit, but osteoperosis caught her.

Can anyone explain to me what the MSE headline "Household income should rise in 2013" means in terms of a housewife/dinner nanny and full-time construction industry worker?

  • Fuddle,
It was mentioned on the radio yesterday but you are talking of a piffling little amount something like £1-£2 a week and I think it was mainly people who work(but it never said that the increase in income will be lost because food has risen in price, rent has gone up, cost of petrol etc...)so no one will feel any benefit.

They are trying to say that the recesion is improving...anyone believe that? No, neither do I...

£4-£8 per month better off then, thank pops. I suppose I'll look on the bright side and think that it's DD's dinner money paid for 1 week a month.

If it helps you Fuddle, it's good to see someone benefitting...

They're on about how cuts in bus services and the cost of fares are affecting how people cannot travel to work or to reach places of entertainment even though the population uses the bus is the first choice regarding choice public transport over the train service.

Well, I realise that is the case from my recent use of them.

They are also talking about what supermarkets will have to do regarding fruit and veg after the poor Summer weather and basically they have had shortages but now most are able to cope but Morrisons have admitted they are probably going introduce vegetables that do not look as nice but it will taste as good.
