Getting a new car

I'm still waiting to hear from the OR as to whether I can keep my car, it's only worth scrap as there is so much wrong with it. A friend has suggested that she may be buying a new car soon and might be able to let me have her old car. I'm not sure how much it is worth but it must be more than a £1000 I really have no idea. If I'm allowed a car, what happens if someone gives me a car is it then seen as an asset and as it is worth over £1000 would it be taken away and sold and I would get £1000 towards a car? If so I might just decline her offer of the gift as it seems so much hassle. Trying to find out how I can possibly save for a new old car for me though, it's going to be tricky. What happens though if at any stage in BR I have a car worth over the £1000 do I declare it and lose it? Hope that makes sense as to what I'm asking.

Just borrow it - otherwise it will be an aquired asset which OR could well take.

Is it ok to borrow a car and for me to pay for insurance and tax?

    Yup, no reason why not.

That's exactly what I have done. As long as you have exclusive use of the car AND the OR has agreed that you can run a car there's no problem. Just remember that you will need to tell the insurers that you are not the legal owner otherwise there could be issues should you need to claim.
