Separation has financially ruined me - what should I do?

I've just called and tried to open a Coop Cashminder account - basic with no OD, etc. They took all my info and it got referred to another dept. Apparently I will hear via post in a few days :-(
If you can't get an OD, I'm not asking for credit. Bit worried I may not even get a basic account! If this one is a no - what other good options are there? Internet based banking is a must. Debit card, direct debits and standing orders are all I need.0 -
You will definitely get a basic account. They offer the cash-minder account to bankrupts so dont worry, it'll be fine. Co-op also do internet banking.

You sound like a nice guy, all the very best of luck with getting this sorted. And it WILL get sorted.
As stated already, might not be tomorrow, or the day after, but at some point this will be sorted :-)0 -
You will be able to get a basic bank account, the only checks the do are identity checks - the one thing that can make it a bit harder is if you are not on the electoral roll at your current address.
If they cannot easily use that as proof of who you are it would usually be referred and take a little longer.
But you should be able to sort it.
Good luck.A smile enriches those who receive without making poorer those who giveor "It costs nowt to be nice"0 -
Not a lot of advise but wanted to give you some encouragement. I was left with £45K debts after a failed relationship and entered a DMP with end date around 2015. Once you learn to budget it becomes a goal to clear debts quicker and I will be debt free by 01/2013, 2 years early.

5 years sounds a long time but with hard work and determination, you can make it a shorter journey, good luck :TLBM 11/2009 Total Debts 11/2009 £44624 with DFD 2015

Hi
If you have moved recently, they may need to do more ID checks than if you were in your old home.
There are loads of other basic accounts around, so do not worry. If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -
Thanks people. I only moved in April and havent registered on the electoral register yet (need to get organised!!).
I'm looking forward to embarking on this now - having an end date really makes a difference compared to trying to chip away at huge CC debts with no real idea of what difference it's making and when it will end.
I'm sure everyone will say this, but I never want credit again ;-)0 -
Hi confused mr e just wanted to say I really feel for you sounds like you've been through the mill. But on the other hand you sound so committed to your family and responsible, maybe not what you want to here right now but sounds to me like any woman would be happy to have you. Really wishing you all the best, sounds like you've got the attitude to turn this around xDF as at 30/12/16

Hi Mr E
An alternative view here. Why go down cccs dmp etc.
Your overall debt is not huge, if you weren't making debt payments you would have enough to live.
How old are you? I ask this because it gives an idea of health and ability to put yourself through some really hard work to get out of difficulties. If you could get a second job (bar work etc) on the 4 nights you dont see kids you could make up the £250 shortfall and have enough to start paying some of the debt off. Would even give you a social outlet and reduce temptation to spend cash.
If and only if you do this and get to a position where you are capable of making your minimum payments might then be worth asking family for a little help. So take a loan from family to pay off silly rate ccs then pay family back at same rate as minimum payments were.
Just an alternative to the dmp route!0
