Nationwide rant

After both being with nationwide for 10 years plus, we decided to get our mortgage with them aswell (FTB).
Both earn 23k, myself on a permanent contract, my gf on a 2 year fixed contract, (and likely to be given a perm job afterwards as part of a graduate scheme). Got an AIP fine, the nice mortgage man in the Nationwide branch checked with the underwriters that the 2 year fixed contract wouldn't be a problem. Had an offer accepted for £153k, both had excellent credit histories, made the full application, paid a £99 booking fee, Nationwide appointed us a solicitor and did a valuation which they paid for as part of the offer for existing customers.....
Then 3 weeks later they've come back and said they won't give us a mortgage because of the 2-year contract!!!
So angry right now! Is there anything we can do?

I feel your pain - similar situation, different reason for decline but same outcome. I'd love to know why the branch advisors and the mysterious underwriters they check things with tell you one thing but when it comes to the crunch you get a totally different response. Surely they should all be singing from the same hymn sheet - have they not all had the same training??
Sorry, no constructive advice, but I totally sympathise.0 -
Apparently now they've come back and said they need some sort of letter from HR confirming the terms of her employment...although the man at Nationwide said he wasn't really sure what that meant exactly, so will have to get some form of letter and wait and see!0

Yes, we had to get an employer's reference too, confirming salary terms. We had ours before we went to full application but it has made no difference in our case.
Sorry to be so negative, I really hope it works out better for you, fingers crossed for you0
