documents requested

About 2 years ago me and my wife divorced, during the serperation i found out she had been paying a debt in both our names to robinson way for a debt originally held with hsbc, the debt must have originated over 10 years ago as i havent been with that bank in a long time. I decided to take over the payments because she couldnt afford to keep up the repayments. around a month ago i decided to go through my finances and realised i didnt know what this debt actually for, I asked my ex and was told she wasnt sure but she thought it was for a loan. I asked for the original documents but was told she didnt have any, so I contacted robinson way and asked them to provide me with the orignal documents relating to the debt, they told me they would contact hsbc and request them, after waiting nearly a month i hadnt recieved any communication from them so i phoned them again, i was told they had contacted hsbc and there were no documents available so they couldnt send me anything, but they have said they dont think its a loan and it maybe a current account debt as all they have for a reference from hsbc is a sort code and bank account number!!. So I have now asked for written proof of how the debt was accured and any other details. They said they will conact hsbc again and tyr requesting them.
So my question is where do i stand if they cannot provide any details of what the original debt was for and any relevent documents.
Any help would be welcome
