The Shard Opening

How embarrassing was that, what a complete let down.

There were thousands of people waiting with baited breath, it started 10 minutes late and was unbelievably crap. Everyone was totally underwhelmed, expecting something to happen so hung around. Eventually they realised it was just different colour lights illuminating the north side of the tower and a few laser shining out.

Without fail everyone was disappointed and the Brits were embarrassed at what a rubbish show it was for the many many tourists.

Hopefully we put on a better show for the Olympics.

I only live 10 minute walk away, I pity anyone who travelled any distance.

The best show I saw was on the way home, two very drunk guys on Boris bikes singing rude songs about Barclays while struggling to stay on the bikes before one crashed comedically into a shop front.

Amusingly they have a facebook wall on the shard website in the expectation of compliments, it's full of very annoyed people having ago about how poor it was. I can see it being removed shortly...

Oh and looks like the live streaming crashed.

I asssume they are talking about some of the Masts they erect around the country. A few of them are taller than the Shard

    Agreed.

These masts are usually referred to as 'structures' since they are not buildings in the normally accepted sense, which is why they can legitimately make the claims they do for The Shard.

This is really splitting hairs over definitions. In this case size matters.:)

Emley Moor is a free-standing concrete structure and it and is 20m taller than the Shard.

I think it's more a case of the Shard being the tallest because they say so. :)

This Wikipedia page contains the wonderful line:
Emley Moor will be 20 metres (66 ft) taller than the Shard London Bridge tower, which will be tallest building in the UK when it's completed in 2012.

Emley Moor is prettier to look at as well. What a shame for the people who made a journey to see The Shard. They should have done a animated projection like the LG Optimus show in Berlin:

Skip to about 4 minutes for the best bits.

I thought the Royal Wedding was quite spectacular, but from what I read about the opening ceremony of the Olympics that sounds dreadful. I hope we aren't shown up big style.

No, it's always been like that.

Probably because otherwise a list of the worlds/country's tallest 'buildings' would have often been nothing but a list of transmitting masts.

Strictly speaking they should talk about the tallest inhabited building (inhabited in this case includes shops and offices although the Shard would qualify anyway).

Normally, when you see a comprehensive list they tend to show the masts along with the inhabited buildings.
