'a program could not start' when trying to send remote assistance invite

I have been trying to get the remote assistance function working for a friend who is using Windows XP pro but it fails at the final step. He has opted to send the invite file by email but after specifying the email address and length of time + password etc he gets a message saying the 'a program could not start' and to try again.
I thought there might be a problem with his email client(he does not use one so nothing has been set up) but the same thing happens when saving the invite to a file instead of sending.
Has anyone come across this and got it fixed?

I asked for advice when I was struggling with remote assistance. I wanted to be able to help a friend sort minor problems on their laptop without having to explain things over the phone.

I was recommended TeamViewer. It's simple to set up & simple to use (it must be - I'm using it)

I already have Avast so I will get him to install a copy on his PC and then see how it goes.
