12 year old council tax debt

Hi there,
I'm new to the forum and I need some help/advice.

Out of the blue I recieved a debt collectors letter for owed council tax to Glasgow City Council from 1996.

I rang the debt collectors and they stated that the debt contracts had just been renewed and I owed circa £5k.

I have heard nothing of this debt in the last 12 years , and I have no contact with anybody about in that period.

I was burnt out of the property and apparently I had not submitted the appropriate documents at the time.

Do I have to pay this debt after all this time?

I think that you do have to pay council tax debt from however long ago.

It appears that in Scotland they have 20years to recover council tax.

£5k sounds a lot for council tax. I'd ask them for a full written breakdown of the bill to see exactly where you stand - although you will probably struggle to obtain your own records from that long ago.
