No savings at all!

Can anyone help. I earn between £7,000 (after deductions) and £12,000 a year. (usually the lower sum)
Last year I had to pay £3,000 in tax plus more for advance installments.
I am now 56 years old. I have no savings of my own at all. I live alone in a house which costs me about £1,000 a year in utilities. It is a good space as I am a freelance designer/maker and performer.
I realise today that I should have bought an ISA last year,to mop up what I ended paying tax on, and hope to this year as I have an Alliance and Leicester Premier Account already through which I pay my bills.
Will there be a retirement pension from the Government when I retire? Any ideas from anyone on what kind of savings I can make now for the future.?

You'll need 30 years of contributions to get the basic state pension. If you have been married in the past you may be able to get a pension based on your (ex)husband's contributions.Trying to keep it simple...
