Tablet for a 9 year old?

  • Since he is just 9 years old, I agree with Lifeform's suggestion of getting him a second hand ipad. You can restrict what games or apps he can use by yourself.

A new tablet by Asus has come out recently.. in partnership with Google.
It is on the Android operating system and is called the NEXUS 7. It is 7 inches and is very powerful but the best part is the price!! £159!! You are getting really good technology and really fast, it is the first sub £200 tablet that the UK has seen and has been really popular so far! I think it would be a good choice for your son. You can do everything other tablets do.. but it is more compact.. but it is only wi-fi but I doubt your son will mind that. Bear in mind there is no expandable storage so if you buy the 8gb £159 yiu cant expand but you can use online "cloud data" storage services like Google Drive. There is a 16 gb version for £199 if you prefer.

You can buy it at play.google.com or I think they sell it at Currys/PC World... probably other retailers as well.
  • I agree with the earlier suggestions of an iPad. The app market makes it head and shoulders above some other options and to most kids t is probably what they see as a tablet anyway. As for looking after it, I let my 4 and 6 year old use my iPad. They are generally pretty rough with anything but I made a big fuss about the the iPad and the need to look after it. I think it also helps being "daddy's", so if they are using it they know it is a loan.

I would go the iPad route but perhaps allow use in the home or maybe get a laptop? More useful for homework, generally a bit tougher and just as useful?

DD2's on my iPad now, but I'd never get either of mine the devices for themselves. I'm still funny about them having the 3GS's from my drawer.

A refurbished ipad 2 direct fom Apple is £259 when they have stock.

Also, you won't have to pay for apps twice because you can install apps that are already installed on your existing ipad for free.

My 3yr old DD started using an ipad when she was 2 and my 5 yr old DD started at the age of 4 and they use it for BBC iplayer, education, art and games. I've recently purchase my 3rd iPad so we can have one each.

    Hi guys,

Can anyone help? I'm thinking of getting my 9 year old some sort of tablet for Christmas, strictly for educational purposes. I dont want it to have any gaming capabilities other that maths/ science games.

I have refused to buy him any gaming device, he has never owned a Nintendo device and we don't have a wii or Xbox. Thinking now is the time to introduce him to electronics, I own an iPad and he plays maths games on it regularly do I'd like him to have his own. He a bright boy and it'd need to be suitable for 9-12's. I'm open to any ideas as I have no clue what's on the market! If anyone can help I'd really appreciate it, thank you!

The last thing you wont to do is buy a really exspensive Tablet PC. 9yr £400 pound PC Tablet does not mix. This seems to be a good choice. brought one of these last year for collage. heres the link - crazzygadgets.miiduu.com/via8655-android-22-pc-tablet P.S past into browser
