Abbey National Paymentare

You'll have to excuse my ignorance, but I really don't know what PPI is or whether I can claim it back. I would consider using a claims handler but everyone says I shouldn't as it's just as easy to do it yourself. Well, maybe it would if I knew what I was doing.
We took out an Abbey National mortgage in 2002, and took out Paymentcare on it. I'm assuming it's a PPI from the name. We then changed mortgage provider in (I think) 2005, but continued to pay the Abbey National Paymentcare. We are continuing to pay it now.
So I guess my questions are:
Is Paymentcare a PPI?
Can I claim anything back?
If so, how?
Again I apologise for my ignorance, it's probably all very straightforward, but I get so confused with these things.
