incorrect default on credit report

I have just been refused credit and was wondering why so i did a check on checkmyfile.com which has showed me something quite disturbing.
There is a default showing on my credit report from 5 years ago which is obviously putting people off lending me money!! I have discovered that this is due to a hire purchase agreement that i had for a car, which i terminated a couple of months early in order to buy a new one. I followed all instructions given by the company to terminate the agreement, yet an error by them meant that it was not cancelled and it defaulted my last payment. I have an email from them admitting liability and clearing me of any blame and any remaining payments (glad i kept that one).
The thing is now that I have no idea what i should do to get this blight off my credit report. I have looked online for solutions and i think my first point of call will be the company involved, although they dont seem to be answering their phones at the moment ....
any advice greatly appreciated!! :money:

Complaint in writing signed for. Hard to ignore.
Include email you have.
Insist on removal of default and compensation for the issues that it has caused and your time/costs.
Luckily it would drop off after 6 years anyhow:beer:0
