Moving house and getting utilities

Hey all,
6 months out of bankruptcy and things are finally looking up.
Hubby has the offer of a new job but we have to move400 miles.
I am worried about getting hooked up to utilities and broadband coz of credit rating (or lack of)
Have sorted a house out (privately) and saved enough for the removals.
What are other peoples experiences?
Cheers

I haven't moved house but have just carried on paying the utilities as normal since BR and it's not been a problem. Maybe it is because I have never owed any utility bills at all and have always paid them monthly on time and as requested though."Our prime purpose in this life is to help others. Hi MTDancer
I asked a similar question a couple of weeks ago as I am in the same situation as yourself, about to move house and need to hook myself up to utilites but I too got the same reply that you just did above, seems that its quite common!...Anyway, I'll be following your thread with interest and I hope that we both get some helpful informed replies that actually help to answer our questions on this matter from someone who has actually been in this situation rather than unhelpful posts that don't bear any relation to what we have asked!....best wishes0 -
I have just asked my friend who is BR and has moved house and she had no problems at all. She kept all the same companies however with the exception of the water company but the water company was no problem either. HTH and I do hope that meets with 22bear's approval."Our prime purpose in this life is to help others. And if you can't help them, at least don't hurt them." Dalai Lama0

Although i have not moved house i was concerned about my bills, even though i did not owe any. In your case if you inform your utility provider you are moving address and it is more than likely you will stay with them, there should not be a problem. They already know you and you have past history with them.
If you decide to change supplier by law you have to have gas/electric etc, the only thoughts on this would be you may have a card/key meter in place from a previous tenet/or you may be offered one.
After my bankruptcy, i told my supplier which are southern electric/gas, i was totally honest from the begining, they had no problems with the way i paid from my direct debit account. But saying this, i opted for a key and card meter and it was the best move i made.
Same with Virgin Media/sky, all direct debits, so in your case it will hopefully be a change of address.
I am hoping i have helped a little xB/R ..... May 24th 2011

Thanks Shelley, think the thing to do is just go for it and, if needs be, offer payment up front. No IPA so all money earned is our.
I have never missed a utility bill so shouldn't be a problemBuilding a new life after bankruptcy0 -
Have not heard of anyone on here having problems with services when moving in your situation in a long time.BSCno.87The only stupid question is an unasked oneLoving life as a Kernow Hippy0

When we moved after br, we changed all the utilities to the ones we were already using. Like you we never missed a payment, it was all quite easy.
We moved in, took the readings rang them up and that was it.
Do not forget to take the readings from your present property.0 -
Can I ask if anyone knows what the situation would be if, like me, one has previously not been responsible for paying utilities for a number of years because they have been living for several years in shared accomodation where the bills have been paid by the live-in LL, but now the same individual is about to move into their own privately rented flat where they are now going to be responsible for setting up and paying the utilities?
If that person has a bad credit rating with many defaults (not with utility companies but with previous mortgage payments, repossession and subsequent shortfall, bank loan and credit cards defaults showing up on their credit files but no CCJs) ..and is preparing for bankruptcy, are they likely to experience problems with the utilites companies in this sort of situation? And if so, can anyone advise how to overcome any problems? if a possible solution is the fitting of, say, a pre-paid meter but what if the actual owner of the property that the person is going to be renting from perhaps then doesn't consent or want a pre-pay meter installed in their property? Or do they indeed have a say in such matters and can such a meter be easily converted backto what it was before at the end of the tenancy?
Does anyone have any experience or know about such a situation please and can advise, I'd really appreciate to hear..I asked this question before a couple of weeks ago in a separate thread but unfortunately wasn't able to get a response that helped to answer it because my thread was almost immediately somewhat "taken over" with irrelevant information so my original question got lost in the mix...so hopefully I can get a useful informed answer this time round0
