Unlikely if it's been turning over normally and the OP has been at it for some time.

That's assuming it is spinning at normal speed but the OP seems confident on that.

Thanks everyone for your help and advice.

BIL has got it running :A

He said he went and got some new plugs, popped them in and it's now running like a dream again :T

Just phoned my employer, and was told I could still come in for the second half of my shift, so not all's lost there either.

possability and somthing for the OP to try dont rule it out because you think its unlikely.

it could be that the alternator has packed up, and the cars turning on battery power alone.

crank sensors fail on them with no warning that will prevent a start up.

I said either no fuel or no spark.... turns out, dodgy plugs so not far off really! Bit of prevantative maintainence needed OP!

A car would only turn over on battery power. The alternator wouldn't kick in untilt he engine was actually running -which was the problem.

If you can spend the day grinding the starter then the problem is not with the battery or the starter motor :kisses3:

When was the last time you had it serviced out of interest? Not including kwik fit or the like.

Was the car running a bit rough before or misfiring? I would have thought even with one duff sparkie the engine would still fire up. Were the old plugs covered in oil? I still reckon there was a loose connection or bad contact, and changing the plugs just happened to have fixed this too as a result.

Would a local garage be better equipped to help me start my car?

Anyway BIL has just arrived. I'm sure he'll get it started for me :)

Only if they have the diagnostics equipment.

That's strange. It sounds as if your coil pack had just come adrift from the spark plugs.

It is very unlikely that all 4 spark plugs would have fouled up at the same time, so I would have expected it to start up on three cylinders.

I did ask to try his key. He said it wouldn't work but I insisted.
He was right. The car won't even turn over with his key. Infact I can't even turn the ignition.

You've said you're not mechanically minded, but COME ON!

    But you also suggested:
    • disconnecting fuel line to check on fuel
    • possible fuel pump issue
    • immobilisor issue
    • wrong type of fuel
    • any number of electrical issues from a screwed up immobilisor to an issue with the coil packs
    • swap coil pack from neighbours car
    • tow it to the supermarket
    Almost a full house!
