Copies of old payslips

Hey everyone - any advice on the following situation would be appreciated
I am currently in disagreement with the Student Loan Company about how much I have repaid on my loan.
I started repaying my loan whilst in my previous job and have continued at my new company. I have copies of my payslips for this company dating back to when I started but, unfortunately, I have misplaced the payslips from my old company (I've moved house twice and been travelling since then).
I spoke to my old company and they said that they were unable to provide the payslips as the previous Financial director had left on bad terms and they were unable to access the software. However, having spoken to him, it sounds more like they might simply be unwilling to pay the fee to the new (remote) financial management company to access the data as I am no longer an employee.
In turn, he refuses to assist me in what he sees as 'their responsibility' due to their ongoing feud, unless they (or I) pay his £72 fee.
I was just wondering whether there is any legal obligation for companies to provide copies of old payslips?
I realise that I should have kept them for up to 6 years but, given that these things do happen, what would be the best course of action?
Many thanks

No they don't have to give you copies. Their legal obligation was to give you the originals.0

If you are asking for copies they would then be doing you a favour and I guess the charge is for their time and paper etc.0 -
Is it the individual payments you need to know? Wouldn't the final year figure be on your P60?0

The Student loan deductions are on the P60, perhaps request this.
Regarding the SLC, in total I had three yearly statements that showed no deductions. I just sent a copy of my P60. I did complain on the third year, but it may not be their fault - rather HMRC not telling SLC about the deductions.0
