I used to be with Petplan and found them really efficient. My vets dealt with them directly which meant I didn't have to pay anything other than any excess. Petplan settled directly. Very courteous.

However, following advice on here I moved to M&S who were half the cost and actually offer more, and there is no excess to pay. I will have to pay and then claim back so if there is a major claim I'm in trouble but hopefully my 4 year old Old English Sheepdog will stay fit and healthy.

    E&L sound a nightmare.

This is the one area where I have been stung. I looked at all my insurances and got the best quotes and insured my horse with E+L. Biggest mistake of my life. My horse fell ill 4 months after purchasing (had full vetting) following £2000 of investigations, treatment etc I had to have him put down. Despite reporting E&L to the FSA for several breaches and going to the insurance ombudsmen it took them 5 months to pay £500 of the claim. They refused to pay the rest and also refused to pay out the cost of the horse for which I was insured (on their platinum option!!!) I tried everything but could not make them pay and I ended up paying £1500 to the vets who got their solicitor to threaten to take me to court as I couldn't pay within 28 days of the horse being put down. I also lost £3000 it cost to buy the horse. I now loan a horse (paying off the rest of my debt first before saving for another one) and I insure her with NFU who charge me twice as much as E&L but who seem to pay out with no fuss. Sometimes when you are trying to save money cheapest is the most expensive

NFU do do pet insurance, and they have a good reputation as well, along with M&S and Pet Plan.

There's always people on the insurance boards asking/recommending E&L, but they have such a bad reputation for stunts like this I wouldn't touch them. :-(

Glad you got your money in the end though.
When I had my loft converted back into a loft, the neighbours came around and scoffed, and called me retro.
