Notice period Help!

Hi My Money saving friends!

Im hoping you guys can help with a little dilemma I have myself in.

I was offered a new Job on Friday last week, I was on annual leave at the time, and called into my boss straight away to inform her of my Intentions... The position starts on the 23rd July (4 weeks from today, my current Job requires 4 full weeks notice)

On Friday when I called my boss i said that I would officially hand in my notice today and would like to take the 4th week of my notice period as Holiday.

I have done the above and have been informed that by the 20th July, my proposed last day of employment with current job I will have not accrued enough Hols to take the 4th week as ann leave. - and my boss will not release me early, which i guess she doesn't HAVE to, as I am due to give 4 full weeks notice as per contract.

Now, as im sure you can imagine, I don't want to loose this new position due to higher wage, more opportunity etc etc.... but I have always been fair to employer and they have to me.

What do I Do!! all help Greatly received :D

Renegotiate with one or both! Explain you made a mistake with the dates. It happens.

What does it say in your contract? If they are not allowing you to take holiday (what you've accrued) do you object to being paid for those days (note a partial day accrued rounds up)?

A partial day may be rounded up by an employer but it does not have to be. If they want they can work it out to the minute.

Check they have done the holiday correctly

What is the holiday year how many holidays do full timers get

    prorata till the last day

eg april-march statutory min holidays 28 days would be 8.6 days less those taken.

If you handed notice today 4 weeks make your last day [STRIKE]23[/STRIKE] 30 July (notice starts the day after you give it) unless they accept the notice on friday then the last day would be the [STRIKE]20th [/STRIKE]27th.

    edit : fix notice dates

    Thanks. I get 28 days...

Holiday runs Jan-dec. Total Hol used = 15.5, accrued = 13.5 (to the 20th July) so i already owe 2 days!

Surely 4 weeks notice from today would be last day Fri 27th?

  • Employers know that new staff will usually have a notice period to work, so I can't see them having any problem.
