You could try asking on the local Freecycle site for school uniform to help you out.0

Most schools would be sympathetic to kids wearing their old uniform for the last few weeks of term in these circumstances -or (and often a better solution as the kids won't look different) will offer/loan you stuff from their unclaimed lost property/PTA shop. As you actually have no income these weeks free school dinners could be an option too. I know it's hard but go to the school and explain -and ask if either of these options are open to you.
What area of the country are you in ? There may be some resources local to you people can suggest. Also most airports have a stranded passengers charity at the airport (I know for example Gatwick does) and they may be helpful in suggesting local resources to you who could help. Also pop in or have a word with the local Salvation Army -they should be able to help with food.
Is your job unionized-If it is talk to the union rep at the airport too.
If you've not looked on the OS forum do so -they have some fab ideas for making food go further-check out local markets for cheap veg and places like Aldi for cheaper food and things like red lentils to stretch stuff like bolagnaise and shepherds pie as well as cereals.
Also check out if YOU could apply for a crisis loan .......or if your partner can once the deduction is made.
I understand not wanting to ask your employer before you've barely started -so hopefully we can come up with some alternatives for you.
Oh and congratulations on the new job !!

The only other thing I can suggest is calling up all your bills and defering them for a month. As long as you are up to date most basic things like council tax, gas etc should be understanding.
You should be able to do a food shop for 4 for £60 if you really watch your pennies. That should leave enough for your travel costs.
School uniform, if they still have the grey bottoms and white tops from their last school, send them in those and wait until september and then buy the sweatshirts, or Matalan are doing sweatshirts for £3 each.
Hope this helps
