Thanks for your replie's. i will go to the family planning clinic. i am very cross with my doctor as she told nurse the mini pill would be a good idea. So I made the appointment with the doctor who tried to tried then toforce me onto the coil.
As you say a lot of doctors are trying to force the coil onto women, down their throats more like!
My friend had dealings with this doctor and changed surgeries as she had really upset her and got her into a right state. It makes me so mad when Dr's no longer listen to their patient's.0 -
I honestly don't know why everyone is so down on the coil? I had my first coil fitted over 14 years ago, after the birth of my son, I didn't want to take the Pill as I was breastfeeding. I have had absolutely no trouble with it, nor has my (childless) sister, who had hers fitted around 3 years ago.
Doctors are only "pushing" the coil because recent research has shown it to be at least as effective, if not more so, than the Pill. And when you take into account the amount of unplanned pregnancies which result because of poor compliance by Pill takers (forgetting to take every day, use of antibiotics, vomiting etc, which can render the Pill ineffective) the figures are even more impressive.
Many women complain of heavy bleeding when using the coil. Often, like the OP, they have always had heavy bleeding, it's not necessarily the coil that is the cause. A newer type of coil (Mirena) has hormones which are released over time, just like the Pill, but in much smaller doses. This can often be beneficial to women who have "problem" periods, although it's not suitable for everyone.
One myth is that the coil is somehow "long-term contraception", in one sense it is. It can be left in place for up to ten years but once removed, your fertility is unaffected, you can get pregnant immediately and you don't have to wait for your body to "return to normal"
The implantation procedure is very simple as long as it is performed by someone who has been trained correctly. Women are often horrified by the size of the box.....at around 12-18 inches long, it can be a shock if you see it! The coil itself is tiny, most of the box is taken up by packaging, string and the applicator. (And the information leaflet)
The coil has been proved to be one of the most effective contraceptive methods with the least amount of potentially harmful side-effects. It's cheap, doesn't contain chemicals or drugs and the effects are reversible. What's not to love about it?
When you think about how you got your baby out of your body, having a coil fitted is like a walk in the park!"I may be many things but not being indiscreet isn't one of them"0 -
thats all perfectly fine barbiedoll, but it has to be a personal decision - and my personal decision is that i don't want a coil.0

Barbiedoll - I'm "down on the coil" because I've experienced it (Mirena) and the side effects made me miserable but I'm not going to into that here.
If it works for you then great but don't go assuming that it will be the same for everyone. And lets not confuse the copper coil with the Mirena coil. The latter, as you point out, contains progesterone whilst the former has no hormone but still has the (albeit very small) potential for "harmful" side affects such as ectopic pregnancy.
However, I'm no medical professional and that is why the OP needs to speak to the experts and not heed the personal experiences of random women - including me - which may not even affect her.0
